Melanie's POV
I shoved my gun down in between my knees as my eyes were set on the road. Our group was separated, which was the worse thing possible for a group to do. Now their all animals and my brother could be one of them. He was for Rex, I was sure of it knowing Rex wouldn't have let him out of his sight. Caden's head popped out of the mini window which was between me and Kyle and looked at me worried.
"Are you okay?" He asked probably noticing me shiver.
I nodded knowing I had to stay strong, not only for me but for my brother.
"We have to find them." I said bluntly, keeping my eyes on the road, my brown hair getting in my face from the wind as we drove farther and farther away from the Drudges.
"We gotta find whoever is still alive, we need to stick together." Kyle said in his most courageous voice, but it didn't hide the hint of fear I could hear as his voice cracked slightly.
I nodded in agreement, but a part of me was unsure of all of this. A part of me knew something was wrong, something that will destroy my happiness, obliterate it.
We drove in silence as it started to get dark. We didn't know how far along the highway we were, but that was our assumption is that they would for up to Denver. I sighed heavily, my heart heavy with worry hating to wait. All I needed is to see their faces again. That's it. Nothing more. But its a lot to ask for in a world like this.
Rex's POV
Mack bursted through the door making Daniel jump beside me, but soon relax as he realized who it was.
"I just scouted the area, there are Drudges in the forest around us but not many on the road, I think were safe if we don't make too much noise. Or no one cuts themselves..." He said with a sigh, looking at Daniel then at me before walking towards the Radio trying to pick up anything.
We were staying at a toll booth between Denver and Santa Fe and it was just us. We were all that's left, everyone else got turned making my jaw clenched just thinking about it. But then another worry came over me, no one came back from that patrol group, not even Mel.
I do love her, Ive known her for awhile ever since this mess started, but I knew I loved her deep in my heart. Hoping that didn't sound to mushy gushy as a guy, but it really doesn't matter once everything is like this. There was no Man Pride or Bro's Code, nothing. It was only us, our guns, and them.
The only thing that kept me from falling apart with her not here in my arms was Daniel. I had to be a good role model for him, knowing he was scared as hell to. I looked down at him as his eyes were droopy.
We kept moving after that night until we found shelter, always looking behind our shoulder since we were completely vulnerable. Maybe not completely thanks to our assault rifles, but we would be able to hold off more than ten Drudges.
With that on my mind it made me turn to the thought of what the hell were those blowing up zombies, at first I was shocked, but soon I took Daniel and got out of there with Mack by my side.
I looked down, thinking of that night. Its true that, I did leave my group behind. I didn't even try to save them, but Melanie was my number one thing in this hell hole, and Daniel was my priority for her. I sighed as I shut my eyes, hating to think about leaving my friends but... to me at that moment, I had no choice.
Just as I was about to drift asleep from all of my thinking, moans and groans were heard outside making all of us jump. We got up silently, Daniels body weight shifting against me with fear as the groans came closer. I looked at Mack who was opening the roof door as we started to walk quietly to him, my eyes looking at the groaning door as it started to be hammered by fists, more than one I could tell. We rushed out to the roof to see us surrounded by them.
Mack swore under his breath as I did, our eyes scanning the scene in front of us, half of those Drudges were our crew mates. But thank the lord none of them were our blowing up chunks of meat.
I moved Daniel to the middle of the roof and got my assault rifle after I handed him a pistol knowing he knew how to use it. I closed the rood door putting a rusty chair under the door knob hoping it will hold them for as long as it could.
Gun shots rang out as Mack started firing to the Drudges closest to the door as I did the same, hearing Daniel shoot some of his own at them.
If this wasn't our situation, I would have smiled when I witnessed Daniel getting a head shot.
Melanie's POV
As we drove we heared gunshots in the distance making Kyle speed up as his eyes searched the road, finally seeing a small toll booth with people shooting on the roof who were surrounded by Drudges.
A gasp escapes me as I saw my brother and Rex shoot with Mack at the Drudges, hope filling my heart as I leaned forward, grabbing my gun. A smile broke out as we all got our guns out of the window, and Caden setting his gun on the truck roof, we started shooting to the mass crowd.
I knew we could take this kind of amount if there wasnt any blow up pals and good driving manuevering. And Kyle was good at that thankfully.
I saw Daniel smile widely as he saw me, making me smile back before shooting at the Drudges who dragged themselves towards our vehicle. We slowed down to get better shots and as soon as they got close Kyle made a one-eighty spin hitting them with the back bumper and driving away to lure them out, and during that I shot a few Drudges thanks to Mack's firing lessons.
My smile disappeared as some Drudges appeared from the forest, some running towards the building, one in contact with the cement wall they blew up, making slight cracks against it from where I could see. Then the others piled against themselves to climb onto the roof only to be shot by Mack and Rex, Daniel helping out with his pistol.
As we did the one-eighty spin a couple of times we were making great progress until I heared a nine year old yell making me look back to see my brother get dragged by one Drudge climbing from the roof behind them, seeing Rex turn and shot the Drudge but one just replaced it, jerking Daniel off the roof onto the ground where Drudges walked towards him with mouth watering faces.
I started to scream to get them to help him, Rex desperatly to shoot at all of them, sending his hand out to grab Daniel who was cornered against the wall, jumping for Rex's hand.
I watched helplessly as we started to drove towards them, Kyle finally seeing whats happening, but as Rex got a grip on Daniels hand, they were torn apart by the Drudges who dove themselves at my brother making me scream in terror but was cut off from my sobbing of my faith drowned with sorrow.
/// OKAY so how was that? Not a good ending I know, but this is only a chapter, not the whole book thank god right? ;)
Also, I need to see if you really want me to keep writing so... Vote and comment if you do, and if there are a lot, I'll even upload faster :)
