Chapter 13

I inhaled sharply as the air flooded back into my lungs and the weight subsided. I look at my surroundings and notice Ben lying on his side with a ghastly gap in his cheek from an arrow that alby seemed to have shot when he was on top of me. His face was so close to mine that it could have been me that was hit and and not Ben. I shivered at the thought.

"Alright everyone slim it! Clint, Jeff, help me carry Ben to the deadheads."

Everyone gasped as Ben groaned when they picked him up. How is he alive?

I can barely look at the gash in his face and I imagine it must hurt like hell. How has he not passed out either? "Shuck! Take him to the slammer. You guys can fix him up there so he can't get away again."

"Good that" they heaved the huge boy off of the ground and towards the slammer. How did Ben even escape in the first place? I saw a knife in his back pocket that could only have come from the kitchen. My face pales and I'm glad that he had seemingly forgot he had it or else the situation could be a lot worse right about now.

Newt was at my side in an instant, Ben forgotten. He pulled me up and wrapped me in a bear hug, so tight I couldn't breathe again. 

"Ne-Newt! I can't bre-breath." I say between gasps. He pulls back slightly but grips my shoulders where Ben dug his nails into me. It stings a bit but I ignore it and focus on the wild look in newt's wide eyes.

"Stop doing this to me! Why do you keep trying to take yourself away from me? I can't live without you! How many times do I have to tell you this?" Newts voice cracks. I've never seen him cry and I was shocked and worried that he was so close to tears.

"Newt what? It's okay what's wrong?" I know that I've been hurt once before but yesterday I was just hungover. I didn't think I got hurt that many times other than falling all the time because of being clumsy, but that only earned me a few scrapes here and there.

"Don't say it's okay! Stop trying to be the hero! I couldn't live with myself if you got hurt! Why can't you understand that?" He was practically shouting at me. Was he seriously mad at me because I didn't want Thomas to get hurt? Why was he saying this out loud for everyone to hear? The look in his eyes and the hurt in his voice made me want to cry. I hate seeing him like this. I never want to see him hurting and I already hate his limp because I can see that that hurts him more than anything else. I wish I could help him and make all of his pain and worries go away. But I can't because I'm useless and that realization hurts even more because I can't give him what's best for him.

I'm still pondering my thoughts when Thomas puts his hand on newts shoulder in an attempt to push him back, "Newt you need to slim it."

"You bloody shank! How-"

"Your gonna hurt her. Let her go." Realization hits newts and his face falls. I was getting irritated with Thomas. The last thing I wanted newt to do was stop touching me and now Thomas made him think that he was hurting me. Could he not tell how upset newt was at the moment? I glared at him instead of voicing my concerns and I could see he was taken back by it.

"Newt I'm fine don't listen to him." I grab his hand and squeeze it so that he knows I'm telling the truth. He seems to believe me because he squeezes back but he still has the dead look in his eyes. They light up with anger when Thomas speaks,

"Are you alright Carly? You should've ran for help back there instead."

"I couldn't just leave you there defenseless who knows what he would have done to you if I hadn't stayed. I probably wouldn't have made it back here in time to get help." Newt stares at me as I talk with what, I can't tell, but I don't think he's very happy with me at the moment. I understand why but I also don't. Sure I could have ran away but if it was me and him back there, he would have stayed to help me.
