I sat in the studio by myself as I worked on some pieces of recordings from yesterday's session with Grace. As I removed my headphones to take a break, I heard the phone in the studio begin to ring. "Hello," I answered.
"There's a call for you on line 2," the receptionist of the production company informed me. I thanked her before answering the phone call.
"Hello, is this Alyssa, Aiden's mother," I heard a voice say on the other line. With a quick look at the phone number, I recognized it as his school's.
"This is her," I replied. I was confused by the call. I rarely ever get calls from Aiden's school as I am typically at work. If they were to call someone it would be Marco. They only call me if it's an emergency. "Has something happened?"
"Well, the afterschool watch program is ending very soon and Aiden has not been picked up yet," she informed me. I looked at the time on my watch and realized it was a quarter 'til 5. Marco should have been there by now.
"I am so sorry, I will be there right away," I told her as I quickly gathered my things. I ended the call and made my way out of the building. On my way out I let the receptionist know that I had to leave early and to direct any calls to my office phone.
I rushed to the school and made it just in time. I quickly parked my car and jogged up to the building. I apologized for the inconvenience as I collected Aiden. "Where's Marco, Mommy?" Aiden asked as I helped him in the car.
"I'm not sure bud, but I'm sure he'll meet us at home," I smiled. There was uncertainty in the words I said, but I didn't want to worry Aiden with things that he shouldn't have to worry about.
Once we got home, I began making dinner as Aiden busied himself by watching TV. When dinner was finished, the two of us sat at the table together as Aiden told me about his day. While I listened, I couldn't help but wonder where Marco was. It must have been evident as Aiden spoke up, "Are you okay, Mom?"
"Yeah bud," I smiled. It was cute to see the five-year-old worry about me when it should be the other way around. I guess I can't blame him though as it is merely a part of his nature to care for others thanks to who his parents are. I've always been the type to worry and care for others before myself, and I know Harry is the same with how he treats his fans.
I cleaned up after dinner and got Aiden ready for bed. After giving him a bath, I tucked him in and waited in the living room. I grabbed my laptop and did some work from home. A few hours had passed when I finally heard the front door open.
I looked up and saw Marco stumble in with a beer in his hand. "Where have you been?" I asked, both curious and upset.
"Was out with the boys," he hiccuped, taking another swig from the bottle. I watched him and tried to remain calm.
"Seriously? What happened to getting Aiden from school?" I fired question after question at him.
He shrugged his shoulders as if it was no big deal, "Not my kid, not my problem."
My eyes went wide at his statement. He had never said anything like that before, in fact, he always treated Aiden as if he was his own. "What the hell! You can't be serious!"
"What? It's the truth!" he shot back. I could see the anger boiling in his eyes, but I was not about to back down.
"Yet you chose to be with me so it is your problem!" I snapped back.
"Well, maybe that was a mistake," he mumbled.
"You know what? You can sleep on the couch tonight." I didn't have the patience to deal with a drunk Marco at the moment. I was tired and needed to get up in the morning for work.
"The hell I am," he grumbled. As I got up from the couch and walked past him, I felt his strong grasp around my arm. "Where do you think you're going?" The tightness of his grip was starting to hurt, but I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of knowing that.
"To bed," I answered with a straight face. "I think you should do the same," I seethed. I forced my arm out of his grasp and made my way towards the stairs. Before I could even reach the bottom of the steps, I saw the bottle that was once in his hands collide with the wall in front of me.
I stopped dead in my tracks, frozen. The bottle shattered to pieces that soon fell to the ground. When I came back to reality, I realized one of them had bounced back and caused a cut on my cheek.
When I turned around to confront him, I saw Marco sitting on the couch with his head in his hands. I could hear his cries as he whispered apologies. I wanted to be angry, really I did, but seeing him break down like that broke my heart. Silent tears of my own began to fall as the realization of what just went down hit me.
Torn on whether to approach him or not, I began to clean up the mess he had created. As I walked back into the living room after throwing the broken pieces away, I saw that he had passed out on the couch. I walked over and covered him with a blanket before heading upstairs.
I quickly treated the wound on my cheek before checking on Aiden. When I saw that he was still resting peacefully, I went back to my own room. As I got ready for bed, I noticed a bruise starting to form on my arm. I sighed and crawled into bed, sleeping off the stress of the day.
