Upon their arrival, the new "8th Years" were lead into the Great Hall, which had been expanded to fit the extra visitors.

"When you have been sorted and partnered, you will stand to the side with your partner and you will be allocated a small table for 10 at the back.

Afterwards, please stay behind so the Minister can explain a few extra details. Note that the Sorting Hat will only match those destined for each other."

"Abbott, Hannah!" Hannah stepped up to the stool. A minute later, "Gryffindor! Thomas, Dean!"
"Bones, Susan!" Susan looked nervous after Dean had been Sorted into Gryffindor. "Gryffindor! Corner, Michael!" Michael was then sorted into Slytherin, much to his dismay. On and on it went until "Lovegood, Luna!" everyone was shocked.
Luna was 19 but it appeared the sorting hat had decided to pair her with someone. "Gryffindor! Zabini, Blaise!"
Blaise was pale. Paler than snow. He was automatically put in Slytherin, Luna leading him off looking her usual dreamy self.

"Potter, Harry!" several girls who remained swooned and closed their eyes, hoping it was they who were destined to be his partner. "Gryffindor!" The hat paused. Harry had his eyes closed and appeared to be praying silently. "Weasley..." Girls looked confusedly at Ron, who was smirking.  Everyone appeared to have forgotten that Ginny was there too. "Ginevra!" There was confusion, just like with Luna but many girls were 'heartbroken' and shot daggers at a very smug looking Ginny, who was having a celebratory kiss with her boyfriend, much to Ron's annoyance.

McGonagall was all too happy to point the happy couple to the side, after Ginny had been sorted into Gryffindor.

"Parkinson, Pansy!" Pansy swaggered up to the stool, winking and sending a flirtatious smile in Draco's direction. Draco rolled his eyes, still annoyed to be there. Although they were best friends, Pansy had a little crush on Draco. "Slytherin! Weasley, Ronald!"

Everyone gasped. This was by far, the most unlikely couple yet. Ron was sorted into Gryffindor (after a few minutes of silent debating in his head with the Sorting Hat about why Pansy Parkinson was not a good partner for him) and he grudgingly followed said girl to where the others were waiting. "Malfoy, Draco!"

Everyone was silent as no one really wanted to be partnered with the guy who had helped kill Dumbledore. "Slytherin!" Then a pause. "Granger, Hermione!" Draco groaned, while Hermione proceeded up the steps with a glare to rival a basilisk's. She too had a silent debate with the Sorting Hat until the Sorting Hat got fed up and screamed Gryffindor, purely to get rid of her.  As the rest were Sorted, people were directed to their tables.

Fortunately, Hermione was on the same table as Harry, Ginny, Luna and Blaise. They were also joined by the Patil twins, who also looked annoyed with their partners, Crabbe and Theodore Nott. But as Parvati commented "Hermione got the worst."

When they stayed behind after the feast, Kingsley Shacklebolt took to the stage.   "These will be your partners for life. Care for each other. You will live with your partner in separate accommodation from the rest of the school. You are expected to marry within the next year and hopefully have a child in the year after that. Concerning the prophecy, I sincerely hope that those who are destined to fulfil it fulfil it before Halloween, for the prophecy speaks of a magical union in marriage. Magical not muggle. I wish you the best of luck and I may add that this was against my will. I know some of you are unhappy with your soul mates but I was out voted by the Wizengamot. It has become known as the Marriage Law. If you have any questions, please speak to Professor McGonagall. '' Hermione had noticed that Kingsley Shacklebolt's eyes had swept over her and Draco several times during his rather sorrowful speech. Hermione could tell he genuinely was sorry for  them.

''Your rooms are as follows. Room A- Hannah Abbott and Dean Thomas. Portrait of Mozart. Room B- Susan Bones and Michael Corner. Portrait of Rowena Ravenclaw Room C- Fay Dunbar and Roger Malone...'' They finally came to 'Room J-Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy. Portrait of Professor Dumbledore.' and 'Room K- Harry Potter and Ginevra Weasley. Portrait of Fred Weasley' then "Room L- Ronald Weasley and Pansy Parkinson. Portrait of Merlin' and finally 'Room M- Blaise Zabini and Luna Lovegood' "Rooms A-I are in corridor one, J-R in corridor two, S-Z in corridor three. Use 'point me' spells to guide you. Beware, you have a lot of stairs to climb, thought there are shortcuts in each corridor. They are directly above the library. (Hermione grinned at this point- until then she was sulking) Don't forget about our lesson tomorrow- 9:00 sharp!" with that she dismissed them and Hermione smiled and dragged Ginny over to a wall. "What're you doing?" Ginny asked.

Hermione smirked."I've found a shortcut!" she sang quietly. She tapped the wall thrice with her wand and said "corridor two".

The wall opened and she dragged Ginny inside a small room with two reclining chairs with seat belts. "Sit down and enjoy the ride!"

They buckled themselves in and Hermione pressed a green button on her chair. They whizzed up and arrived in a small room, like the one near the Great Hall. Hermione tapped her wand thrice and the wall opened, revealing corridor two.

"Thanks Hermione!" giggled Ginny. "See you later!" The two girls parted ways, both smiling.

Meanwhile...

"Ron, have you seen Ginny?" panted Harry as they climbed their sixth set of stairs. "No... I think she went off with 'Mione. Ask the Ferret!" replied Ron.

"Oy! I heard that." called said Ferret. "Any sign of reaching our rooms?" Harry and Ron shook their heads. "First thing I'm doing when I get up there is finding the shortcut." grumbled Ron.

Everyone silently agreed within themselves as no one had  the energy to agree out loud as they climbed their 15th set of stairs. When they reached the 25th, they found a door labelled 'corridor one'. A third of the group departed, feeling intensely relieved.

Another 5 sets of stairs later and they reached corridor two. Harry walked in to find Ginny already ready for bed and waiting impatiently.

She had already unpacked all their stuff seeing as he had taken an extra "half an hour" getting up the stairs.

Draco walked in on a similar result, only Hermione hadn't unpacked his stuff as she said he wouldn't like a 'dirty Mudblood'  to touch his possessions and she 'didn't care for a ferret's belongings anyway'
