" you're not fighting this battle alone "
20th of february 2025
It was a few minutes until the sun had set completely.
I smacked my flashlight against my hand, hoping to at least get some life out of it for just one more night.
I grinned as the flickering white glow finally lit up everything around me.
I rubbed my tired eyes. It's not like I had time to sleep. It could rain or the guards could find me.
A light breezed lifted my matted brown hair. Who cared about my appearance? I definitely didn't.
Then I heard a rustle, interrupting my train of thought.
I ducked behind a tree and covered my mouth.
I peeked out from behind the bark as the faint glow of a flashlight laced through the bushes.
I immediately thought it was a guard.
"This is it." I thought. "My life is finally going to be over, great, because I don't want to live in this hell-hole for another second so just take my life and go."
I kept my eyes glued to the burning light that was coming further and further towards me, preparing myself for the worst.
The next thing I knew, I was only metres away from someone or something in a yellow hazmat suit.
My first instinct was to run, but I was frozen as the thing edged closer towards me.
The flashlight he or she was holding was now pointed directly at me.
"W-who are you?" The person questioned.
"Nora." I replied, my voice my barely a whisper.
Then I turned and ran for all I was worth.
I didn't know what this person wanted with me.
There couldn't be anymore survivors.
Could there?
I heard the person call out to me.
I now recognised her voice as being female but I wasn't about to turn back.
For all I knew she could've been diseased.
And that's not the way I want to die.
But it's probably going to be.
