What is the hardest thing about overcoming depression?
That there is no such thing as overcoming it.
People with depression may feel disheartened that I say this,
Or they may know all too well what I'm talking about.
"Overcoming depression" is a misnomer.
You cannot overcome depression anymore than you can overcome death.
That doesn't mean that things don't get better.
They do, I promise you that.
But every fall, the farmers must prepare themselves for winter.
They must harvest as many crops as they can,
Preserve those that they can't,
And they must hope that when spring comes,
The garden will grow back.
Depression is much the same.
Spring always comes,
But so does winter.
And I've had to learn over the years that I get nowhere by convincing myself that every snowfall is the last.
The only thing I can do is enjoy the warm days of summer and spring,
And be prepared for the cold;
plow the fields,
ensure you have enough food,
And make certain that your roof will hold up.
And in your coldest winters,
We must wrap ourselves tight in blankets,
Sit by the fire,
And hold our families close.
This is the only way we can cope.
Because spring comes,
But so does Winter,
And there is no overcoming that.
