Layla's Pov:"If no one's going to really try to understand the concept of the book than how do you guys expect to get an A on the test?"
Looking at my student's I couldn't help but grow frustrated by the minute. Over the weekend I asked them to read the first three chapters of 1984 in hopes to start talking about totalitarianism but instead, I was greeted with blank faces.
Just when I was able to start picking on random students to give me their opinion of the book, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in," I called out as I walked over to my desk.
"Sorry to bother you Ms. Winters but I was wondering if you wouldn't mind if I allowed Jade to continue to work on the papers for the money. I caught her right before she was going to leave and had asked about the progress. She said she could finish them today if she had another two hours or so," Principal Santos said as he walked into the classroom.
"Of course not," I responded as I forced a smiled.
As always, the last person I wanted to see was about to walk back into my classroom. After Friday night I didn't know whether or not I was at my breaking point with Jade but I did know I wanted to spend as little time with her as possible. If she could finish the paperwork today than I was all for it.
"Come in Jade," Principal Santos said as he turned his head to look at the door.
"Thank you, principal Santos," Jade said as she walked into the classroom while she tied her hair up into a ponytail. Surprisingly the bruises that she had on her face was slowly fading away and she wasn't spotting any new ones.
"So what are we working on by the way?" Principal Santos asked as he turned his attention back to the class. Quietly Jade started making her way to the back of the classroom.
Turning to my class, I watched as they all looked among each other before finally one of them spoke up.
"We are discussing 1984."
"That is actually one of my favorite books. Can anyone tell me their opinion on the concept of big brother?" Principal Santos asked as he walked closer into the classroom.
If there was one thing that made teachers nervous was having the principal ask questions to their students who knew almost nothing about the subject. That definitely speaks volumes about the teacher instead of the students no matter if the teacher tried their best to educate them. After about a couple of seconds of silences, principal Santos turned to look at me.
"Apparently there isn't much discussing is there?"
"Caught us in a rather awkward point in the book," I responded.
"Isn't silences the best answer the class could give you?"
Almost instantly everyone's head turned to the back of the class.
"How so?" Principal Santos asked.
"What opinion is there to give? There are only facts about big brother. If you're smart, you'll say nothing about him."
Nodding his head principal Santos smiled before speaking up.
"I'll take it you're an O'Brien kind of person?"
"I'm more of a Meursault or Caulfield kind of person," Jade responded.
"While then, I wish you luck finding your ducks." Principal Santos responded before turning his attention back to me.
"She's a character, keep up the good work. Hopefully, this class can do as well as your first one," Principal Santos mumbled to me before saying goodbye to the class.
