Chapter 5: I'm Not Blind

You know that cliche scene where two people go to bed together and wake up in each other's arms? Yeah, that didn't happen. In fact, it was quite the opposite. I woke up to Alex's foot in my face.

"What the hell?" I ask before shoving his foot away. He wakes up with a start right afterwards, mumbling something to himself. "Dude, why are you laying on the bed upside down?" I ask, bewildered and confused.

He sits up and rubs his eyes. "I've got a habit of moving in my sleep," he admits with a yawn.

I snort. "I'll say. I woke up to a face full of toe." He blushes at that. "Anyway," I start, standing up. "Why don't we go fix some breakfast."

"Can I have some coffee?" he asks with another yawn.

"Sure."

"Then, I'll cook." He grins at me before pulling on a pair of pants and heading out the door. I laugh a little at him. He's so charming, and he doesn't even know that he has it. At least, he doesn't act like it.

Following him into the kitchen, I see him rummaging through the fridge and pulling out things like bacon and eggs, classic breakfast foods. I lift myself onto the counter after turning the coffee pot on, and I barely glimpse my mother rushing out of the door before it slams shut.

"Who was that?" Alex asks me innocently, placing the bacon on the skillet carefully.

"My mom." I hop off of the counter and pour some cups of coffee, trying not to seem too bothered by it.

"She isn't going to say hi or anything?"

I chuckle rather bitterly at that and put down the pot. "We don't exactly have a great relationship," I state simply, grabbing some creamer for the coffee.

"I'm sorry to hear that." The bacon sizzles as he cooks it, obviously having some experience.

"It can't be helped." I give the coffee rather generous amounts of creamer and sugar as he finishes up the bacon and starts on the eggs.

He leaves the conversation at that, knowing my opinion won't change anytime soon. "So what's the plan for today?" Alex asks, turning to me with a curious look painted across his features.

I shrug. "I didn't plan that far ahead." He laughs a little and finishes up breakfast, dumping equal shares onto our plates.

"How about that fair?" he suggests, practically inhaling his food.

"I didn't know there was a fair." I raise an eyebrow at him.

"Yeah, they've been here all weekend, but, since it's Sunday, today is the last day." He takes a bite of a piece of bacon, punctuating his statement.

"Eh, why not?" I take a bite of the eggs. It's good, but I should have expected it from Alex, of all people. He seems to be gifted in everything.

"Cool!" He looks decidedly more excited, and I can't help a small smile whilst sipping my coffee.

We both get dressed for the day and head out, taking Alex's car to what is usually a huge empty field behind a local park. Huge rides and attractions fill the space, and it smells undeniably like manure and sweat.

"Whoa," I comment blankly, in utter awe of the monstrosity looming before me.

"Isn't it amazing?" he asks in excitement, his eyes lighting up like a little kid's.

"It looks...overwhelming," I admit, feeling a bit uncomfortable. "I've never really been to a fair before."

He gasps dramatically. "Really? Then, we need to have an awesome time to make up for it!"

I raise an eyebrow at that, but he drags me off to our first ride before I can make a single sound.

I wish I could say that our day at the fair was some romantic outing that sparked feelings between us, but that's not how it went. It was like two normal guys going to the fair. Alex nearly soiled his pants in the haunted house, I became infuriated with the man in the dunk tank, and we both ate way too much cotton candy. All in all, it was a good day, and probably the most fun I've had in an extraordinarily long time.

"Are you sure you don't want me to drive you home?" Alex asks, looking rather distraught about my decision.

We're standing outside his rather nice two-story house. Lights and noises sound from inside the building. His family must be home.

"I'm sure," I assure him.

He still doesn't look happy about the idea as he runs a hand through his hair. "Y-You had a good time, right?" Alex asks, looking nervous.

I can't but smile a little at that. The entire day gone by, and he worries about me having a good time. I blush a little and nod. "Yes, I did. Thank you."

He smiles at that, relaxing a little and scratching at the back of his neck. "That's good." He glances around before sighing, the kind of sigh that comes before some bad news.

"What?" I ask, concerned over something that's causing him this much stress.

"Austin, I know you aren't really happy most of the time." He looks me dead in the eyes, and I find myself taken aback. He sighs. "I know you put up an act most of the time. I'm not blind like everyone else."

Emotionally rocked, tears spring to my eyes. To hear those words after just dreaming for someone to care for the longest time, is indescribable, but I refuse to act like a pansy.

"Hey, are you okay?" He puts a hand onto my shoulder, and I force the tears away.

"Thank you, Alex," I tell him honestly, smiling through my tears a little. He smiles at me, and I give him a quick hug. It catches him off guard, but he takes it in stride. I give him a small peck on the cheek and take a step back. "Night."

Turning around, I start walking away into the night. "N-Night! I'll see you later, right?" I nearly laugh as Alex calls after me, and glance over my shoulder. He looks exhilarated and I start to wonder if that was a good idea.

I shake my head fondly and traverse into the night.

Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea...
