We had a plan. Dean and I paired up, Bobby and Jennie, and Sammy was with Jody. We arrived back at the nest hours before sunset, splitting up and hitting our respective nesting spots. Everything seemed to be going great, we each got a few heads to hit the floor before any of the bloodsuckers woke up. And even then we managed to kill most of them without having to face more than two at a time each, so far so good. And just like that they were dead, I counted the heads on the ground... 11? I looked up at Dean, opening my mouth to say something but a creak from the rafters made my head snap toward the roof instead. My eyes caught the shadow just before it tackled me. We struggled and Dean got it, as the body of the blonde man fell onto the floor next to me I started to get up, only then did I feel the sharp pain. Then my body betrayed me, collapsing onto the ground, my heart beating into my ears as I stared at the ceiling.

Just like that the blood seemed to seep out of the veins that run through my body. I laid there helpless, looking up at the man I had gotten to know recently. At his angry eyes, the sadness behind that anger evident to me.

Next there was blackness, but a voice faded slower than my vision. I could hear him telling me to stay with him, and as much as I wanted to listen, my brain faded into the depths of the cold that seemed to soak into my bones.

--Dean's POV--

I scooped her off the floor. "Stay with me, you have to stay awake Scar, stay awake," I pleaded with her as I ran with her to the front of the compound. Sam and Jody were waiting, Sammy jumped into the drivers seat as he called out to ask what happened. I started to explain once we were on the road.

"Sammy she's lost a lot of blood, floor it!" I could hear the panic in my voice and Sam pushed on the gas even more as we sped toward the hospital.

~a few hours later~

The doctor rounded the corner, looking at the group of us, my jeans still covered in a mixture of  Scarlette's blood and the blood and dirt from the hunt as I stood up. "Is she okay?" I heard my voice speak but I couldn't actually feel my body stand to greet him, nor the movement of my lips when I spoke. Jennie stood beside me, having popped up out of her chair the same time as I had

"She is stable for now, whatever animal got her tore a nice sized hole in her. As for the recovery, she will need to be monitored by me, I'm not sure how long it will take her to recover, a week or so maybe. But she may be able to go home a little sooner if I know she has a support network," he pauses to look at the lot of them, his eyes scanning the group, probably trying to guess who they were to the woman who's life he just saved. His eyes glanced back and fourth between me and Jennie one less time before landing on me again. "Are you the husband?"

Jennie's voice followed his immediately, "I'm her little sister, when will we be able to see her?"

The doctor's gaze left my face for hers, "You can visit her now but she is not awake yet, and won't be for some time. I know it will make you feel better to see her, but once you do it would be a good idea to get yourselves cleaned up before she wakes." With that he left us, Jennie immediately headed to the nurse's station to get the room number, and once obtained we followed her to find it.

Jennie sat beside the bed, holding onto Scarlette's right hand. I stood at the foot of the bed, she looked peaceful. I watched as Jody kissed her forehead softly, speaking under her breath "I'm glad you're okay sweetie." With that she turned to Bobby, "I have to be going now. Tell her I'm grateful she's doing well, but I couldn't stay." Bobby nodded and smiled  as Scarlette's heart monitor beeped softly in the background.

I felt like I could breathe again, seeing her laying there, peaceful and alive. It was not easy to breath, but I could. It was a vast improvement from the last few hours of near suffocation.

We all just stood around for a moment. Bobby approached the bed and took her hand. "You scared me kiddo," he said softly, brushing her hair back from her forehead gently. He squeezed her had slightly for a moment and then looked around the room. "Sam, lets go see what they got in the cafeteria, maybe bring her back something for when she wakes up?" Sam agrees and gently pats my back as he passes me to leave the room.

Jennie is looking at me as I stand there with my arms crossed and study Scarlette's face. "You're in love with her."

My eyes glanced at hers. "What?"

"I don't know if you know that or not, but you do. You were genuinely terrified that she was gonna die on you."

"I don't like losing good people."

"It was more than that... I could tell by your baby brother's reaction to your grief..." She said 'baby brother' in an odd sort of way, almost making me want to smile. Almost.

"I barely know her."

"That's not even a heartfelt excuse," I could practically feel her eyes roll as she said this in a soft voice.

I looked at her again, was she right? I thought to myself for a moment, my eyes returning to Scarlette. "Well it isn't an excuse, its true."

"mhm, right." She was clearly over the conversation at that point, crossing her arms and slouching in her chair slightly, letting her eyes droop closed slowly over the next twenty minutes or so.
