His words melt my heart.
"Merle," I move my face closer and look into his eyes, "Why do you care so much about me?"
He looks down at the ground and takes a step back, almost if he's embarrassed? Why would he be embarrassed? Is it me?
I look at him and he's awkwardly staring into the distance, completely avoiding my eyes.
I look down and try to keep the tears down. This feels like rejection. I hop off the tailgate and walk quickly toward the tent. As soon as I unzip it, I zip it right back up in a flash and collapse onto my sleeping spot. Little sobs come out slowly and I feel broken. Did I really think that Merle cared? Maybe I misread the signs.
I hear a shuffle, "The hell's tha matter with you?"
Oh sh*t, Daryl's still in here!
I quickly scramble up and wipe my face, "Nothing," and even I know straight away that it's a big lie.
He moves to grab my hand, no doubt to question me further, when we hear an ear-piercing scream.
"WALKERS!"
And just like that, we run like we've never run before. There's a girl screaming at the edge of the treeline, and she's pointing toward the pickup truck that's parked at the entrance of our camp. Adults surround her, including Daryl and I, looking for the walker.
About 20 feet behind the truck, we see two distinct figures shuffling along the grass. But one has a- is that a backpack on its shoulders? It is!
Many firearms have already been drawn on the figures, but as they get closer, It becomes clear that the slender figure is injured. The larger one is holding up her frame with his right arm and shoulder around her.
They stop about ten feet in front of us, eyes warily looking around the group. The female is hurt badly. It looks like a walker took a massive bite out of her leg.
As I meet her gaze I almost crumble to my knees.
"Sister!" she cries.
My body goes numb. I freeze. And with a heavy feeling of deja-vu, I lose consciousness once again.
