"Hey bud, how you feeling?" I asked Jon as I sat beside him in the hospital room.
"Tired. And high." He cracked a small smile. His voice sounded so weak.
I laughed lightly. "I'm glad you're awake kid. I've missed you."
"Yeah."
About halfway through breakfast, I'd gotten a message from my chief saying Jon was awake. He'd been in a medically induced coma since the accident because of all the surgeries he had to go through. It made his recovery easier.
"How've you been?"
"Good. My job is cool. It's been weird at the station without you so I took some time off. NCIS has kept me busy though."
"Yeah? How're your co workers?" He seemed genuinely interested in my life which I chalked up to him wanting to hear anything but doctors and nurses talking at him.
I smiled. "They're amazing. I couldn't have asked for a better team of people."
"Hey what about me? We're a team! I'm so offended." Jon smiled at me, trying not to laugh. He was one of the most sarcastic people I'd ever met.
"You're my partner silly. That's totally different! You're the best partner I've ever had. There, happy?"
"Very. Thank you. Tell me about your coworkers!"
"Well my team consists of five people including myself. There's our boss, Gibbs. I think he's in like his forties maybe. He's like a fatherly figure to all of us and he's really intelligent. He's a great boss too.
"Then there's Tony. He's an interesting guy. He's a bit of a player and super suave. Handsome, too. He speaks in movie quotes and does impressions all the time. He's our comic relief.
"Ziva's the other girl. She's Israeli, like me. She's the silent type who has a look that could cut ice. She used to be an assassin, which I'm not supposed to share so don't say nothing. She's really sweet.
"Lastly, there's Tim. He went to MIT also, he's a super computer geek, a writer, and a nerd. But he's a really kind, caring, and compassionate guy. We're like hooking up? I don't know what's going on there, but it sure is something."
"Whoa whoa whoa. You're fucking a coworker? Naomi that's like rule number one of how to get fired!" At our station, we were NOT allowed to date coworkers because if we broke up and couldn't work together, that made everyone's life difficult.
"Actually it's rule 12. Our boss has a few rules that he follows and rule 12 is never date a coworker. But we're trying to get around that, maybe? Like I said, I'm not sure what's going on there.
"But anyways, we also have this awesome forensic scientist, Abby. She's goth and punk but also super sweet and bubbly. She's so cute and the two of us are super close. She's the kind of person everyone can get along with." I smiled as I finished talking about my new friends. People were lucky to have one close coworker in their lives and I was blessed with six including Jon.
"I'm glad you're enjoying your job Naomi! It's good to know you've been doing well." Jon paused to yawn and lean back against his pillows. "I think I need to rest for now. Can I call you tomorrow? Will you come by?"
I took his hand in mine. "Of course I'll come by. Whatever you need. I'm here for you."
I left Jon to rest without another word and quickly walked out of the hospital doors just to be hit by a wave of heat off the streets. I hated being in hospitals, especially after the accident. The last time I saw my family was in the hospital and it was to identify their bodies. Since then, I shuddered every time I stepped foot inside one, even if it was just to drop a patient off.
I wiped my hands on my dress and walked slowly down the streets with no destination in mind. I needed to clear my head, and a walk was the perfect way to do that. There were so many people out on this beautiful day and I was smiling as I saw teenagers with their friends instead of on their phones and as couples walked hand and hand down the sidewalks.
I stopped in a small café called "City Light" to pick up an iced latte. I could never get enough coffee.
It wasn't until I got to the park that I stopped to think. I sat on a bench by a small pond and that's when everything hit me. Liam. Jon. My family. As I felt tears brim my eyes, I picked up my phone and called Tim.
"Hello?" There was static on the other end as he answered.
"Hey, it's Naomi. Listen," I paused, "can you meet me at Rec Park by the pond?"
"Yeah, sure. I'll be there in five." The line went dead and I was again left to think about things.
Instead of dwelling on the bad things, I forced myself to think about Tim. He was such a sweetheart and so handsome. He always thought about others and put them before himself. His smile could make me feel instantly better. He knew how to make me happy. But I still had no idea what we were doing. Was this just a hook up thing? Or was this something more?
"Hey." I heard Tim's voice as he neared the bench, the wind messing his hair up.
I smiled. "Hey." Moving over and patting the space next to me, I blushed.
He sat and put his arm around me, but resting on the back of the bench. "Everything okay with Jon?"
I nodded. "Thankfully. He's going well. Apparently they're going to keep him for a bit just in case, but if all is good he should be able to go home in a couple weeks."
"That's great! You must be thrilled."
"Yeah," I smiled. "I'm glad to know he's okay. He's one of my best friends. I don't know what I would do without him." There was a long pause between us before I blurted out a string of straight word vomit. "What are we?"
"Huh?"
"Like what are we doing? Are we just hooking up? Do you have feelings for me? What's going on here?" I knew I would keep talking unless someone shut me up, so I was so glad he answered quickly.
"I don't know. I do have feelings for you Naomi. But I don't know where you're at."
"I have feelings for you too Tim. My only hesitation is Rule 12."
He nodded. "Mine as well. I mean I like what we're doing and I don't want to stop what we're doing. But I'm more than happy to put a label on it if that's what you want."
"Well what do you want?"
"I want you to be my girlfriend."
"And I want to be your girlfriend."
Tim then leaned in slowly towards my face and I did the same until our lips met softly. My heart pounded in my ears with nerves and excitement.
When Tim pulled away, he rested his forehead on mine and smiled. "So then I guess we're boyfriend and girlfriend."
I laughed. "That's so corny. But I like corny." I kissed him again, this time a little harder. He put his hand on the side of my face, his fingers reaching into my hair behind my ears. I couldn't help but smile as we kissed because I finally had what I wanted.
