Pacifica's POV

We waved to Zack as we walked away, and he waved back happily before going inside. The evening air was warm and had a certain glow to it. Dipper looked at me.

"Wanna get something to eat outside? My parents aren't home yet and there's probably nothing to eat." He pulled his phone out and texted him mom we would be eating out. "Where do you want to go?"

"Oh, don't ask me," I gave a dry laugh. "I was never aloud to eat fast food...so I don't really know what's good."

Dipper's pace looked sympathetic for one second before he looked back on his phone. "Um, around here, there's...McDonald's...a burger place..."

"Let's just settle for a burger," I decided.

"Sure. It's only a couple blocks from here."

As the sky darkened and the silvery outline of the moon brightened there seemed to be a purple haze floating around us. Not really, but metaphorically speaking. I watched the moths swarming the streetlamps, crazed by the warmth and light, unaware of their certain death. I wanted to rescue all those poor moths, but I had to keep following Dipper.

We reached the restaurant and were greeted with the smell of oil, grease, and frying burgers. I cringed. Everything felt too strong for me here...the lights, the smell. The screaming children. Dipper put his arm around shoulder in a friendly, reassuring way, and even so the butterflies swarmed my stomach just like the moths and the lamp. I didn't cringe away, not to be rude. When we gots to the cashier, Dipper slid his arm off my shoulder and I gasped in relief.

"Hey, you okay?" Dipper asked.

"Yeah, completely fine. Let's order." I looked up at the menu. Everything seemed the same...but in different sizes. I really really wanted to get adult size like Dipper, but I remembered my parents rule:

"Less is more. Unless it's money."

I felt a wave of rebellion and smiled up at the cashier. I was here now, those rules didn't matter anymore. and"I'll have the adult size burger please."

The food was delicious. I found myself eating every last piece of lettuce that slipped out. Oh, and the fries! Dipper had ordered some for us to share, and I marveled at the crispy outside and the soft inside! What an amazing invention! Dipper was staring at me like I was making a big deal out of this, but he wasn't the one who was forced to eat caviar sushi, was he?

After we had finished our wondrous meal, Dipper told me we had to throw away the paper and leftovers but not the tray. I walked to the trash can and tried.

"Dipper, it's not fitting!" I cried.

He looked at me and sighed. "Pacifica, you're supposed to use your hands to pull the paper off the tray and put the tray up there," he took it from me and did the work. See?

"Well, you can't blame me!"

Dipper shut his mouth, probably wanting to avoid further arguing. "Come on, let's go." He held his hand out to me.

"W-what?" I asked, confused.

"Hold my hand. It's dark, and we should avoid getting separated." Dipper wiggled his fingers.

"O-okay." I hesitantly took his hand and we walked out of the burger place together.

As we rounded the corner, I felt a tug at my head...not a physical tug, but something...like someone...was pulling at the back of my brain. I felt a wave of pain and blacked out.

"Haha! Long time no see, Llama."

I reawakened, not for a long time but just long enough to see the horrified look on Dipper's face before the world plunged into inky blackness.
