Lena
"Mom." I was frustrated and worried, not a good combination. I wanted to jump out of the car as soon as she stopped it. "Mom." I said more urgently.
Mom wasn't responding. When she's stressed or something big has happened, she won't hear anything you say. We were stuck behind an old Sedan. Mom was tapping on the steering wheel, frantically looking at the entrance to the A&E.
I couldn't wait any longer. "You know what?" I swung open the door of the car and sprinted as fast as I could.
"Lena Davidson! Get back in the car!"
The hospital smelt of bleach. Or something similar to bleach. It was an overly clean smell. Sterile. I ran through corridors, past doctors, security, nurses until finally I arrived at Room 45.
I crept inside and lost my breath. Hugo was lying there, lifeless on the bed. He looked disturbingly peaceful. What had he done?
I walked in and pulled the plastic red chair from the corner of the room closer to him so I could sit by his side. "Hugo?" I said gently, as if my words could hurt him just by travelling through the air to his ears.
Nothing. No movement, no breath, no irregular beep from his heart monitor. Nothing.
"Lena Davidson, I can't believe you-" Mom stopped. I didn't take my eyes off of Hugo but I sensed she had seen him. "I'm so sorry, baby." She caught her breath half way and let out a small sob.
His eyes. I stared into his eyes for the longest time. His clear skin was shining against the cracks of light coming through the window. All I wanted to see next was his eyelids fluttering open and smiling his usual smile, the one that made my stomach flutter.
