Marriage, In name only?
Part thirteen

Mark didn't call me on Sunday. I was worried. But not overly worried. Sometimes he has missed calling me. So I went to work like every other day and waited for next Sunday to come around. Hopefully he would call then.
Two weeks have gone by and I haven't heard from. Not phone call and no letters. I call his, Our Mom and Dad. And they said that they haven't talked to him either. The same with Steve and Faith no call and or letters.
So here I sit on the back porch once again and look out at the stars. I am very worried about Mark. Where is he? Did he get hurt? I hope that it has been busy instead of fighting going on.
Today is Thursday. I don't have to go to work today. Since we have caught up on the latest work load. So I am here at home looking at the walls in the house going crazy. I would have at least received a letter from him by now.
Faith just called and asked if I was busy today. I told her no. She asked if she could come over and I agreed. Steve is doing well at his job. So far he has not been injured.
I hear a knock at the door. It must be Faith. Since it is so early. I put down my coffee cup and go to the front door. I am happy that Faith is going to be here with me. Maybe she can take my mind off of Mark for a little while at least.
I open the door without looking to see who it is and I am surprised to see a man in a navy uniform there. The smile falls from my face as I look at him.
"Are you Carla Johnson, Mark Johnson's wife?" He asks me. I only nod my head.
"Mrs. Johnson. My name is Carl peters. I flew with Mark."
"Hi. Would you like to come in?"
"Yes. Thank you."
"Would you like some coffee or something else to drink?"
"No thank you. I came to talk to you about Mark Ma'am."
"Why?" I ask.
"I need to tell you. Mark died in a plane crash two weeks ago." I feel funny all of a sudden. I see Mr. Peters in front of me. But I feel light headed and the room starts to spin in front of me eyes. I can't hear anything either. Just this weird buzzing sound. Then I hear my own voice. Like there is two of me and I stay here away from the pain and leave the other me there with him.
"What? What do you mean? He can't be." I sit down at the table with Carl's help.
"We were doing a fly over for the ground troops. It was all fine at first until we got farther out. That's when we were attacked. Mark's plane was hit far worse than any of the others. The bullets hit his plane and it shattered his ejection seat. I have a tape of his last words to you. Do you want to hear them?" He asks.
I hear myself answering him. "Yes."
He pulls out a little playing device and he pushes a button on the side and it starts to play. I hear Marks voice.
"Shots fired, Shots fired. Two degrees off the right."
I can hear all of the little tingeing sound as the bullets hit his plane. And I heard an explosion. Than mark again.
"I'm hit. I'm losing altitude." He says.
Some one else tell him to straighten it up and Mark tells him he trying. But he took a lot of damage and that he can't get control. Someone else comes on and tells him to eject to get out. And mark tells them he can't. Another person tells him to eject again. Mark tells him that the bullets have done some damage to the ejection handle. Mark tells Carl he is stuck and I hear him to tell him to tell me that he loves me. I pay close attention now. Both halves of me up front and waiting now.
