Alex squeezed my thigh and I met his dark gaze. I knew he wanted to know how I knew Colton but I would tell him later.

Dinner was awkward. Questions poured from everyone. Everyone except for Colton. I caught him staring a couple times which made me remember the college days.

"So Ana, did you attend college?" Grace asked as desert was being served.

I nodded. "I went to NYU for two years." And that's where I met Colton.

"Wow, impressive."

I only went for two years because my scholarships ran out and I couldn't afford to get any more loans. But I wasn't going to tell them that.

"Wait, Colton said before it was nice to see you. You guys already know each other?" Simone questioned.

I looked at Colton and I think he was going to leave the talking to me. "Yeah we met at NYU. He was in one of my classes but I didn't know him very well," I lied.

"Oh, what a coincidence," Simone stated.

"Sure is." I never really realized but Simone and I share many of the same qualities. The same dark straight hair and dark eyes.

Aiden made small talk with me and it wasn't that bad. I appreciated his effort. These people didn't seem that bad but I could tell Grace loved the lavish lifestyle, the one my mother apparently couldn't take.

Alex led me back to the car when Colton called my name. I stopped and turned and saw him walking towards us.

"Ana, could I talk to you for a second?"

Alex's grip around my waist tightened. "No, she can't," Alex replied for me.

I was kind of annoyed that he did that. "It's okay Alex. I'll only be a few minutes."

Alex sent a glare my way. "We're late. We have to go."

Before I even said anything he was pushing to the car.

"I'll talk to you later Ana," I heard Colton say behind me.

"No, not going to happen," Alex replied to Colton.

As we drove away I confronted him. "What the hell was that?"

"How well do you know Colton. I know you were lying when you said you didn't know him well."

"How did you know I was lying?"

"I didn't, but I do now."

"Don't ever do something like that again. Understand?" I stood my ground.

"Don't ask me to stop protecting what's mine."

"He just wanted to talk. Besides he's dating Simone!"

"Tell me, what was he to you?"

"What if I don't want to?" I challenged.

"Stop playing games and tell me."

"It's really not important, just a coincidence that's all," I huffed.

"Ana, what was he to you?" Alex growled. I watched as he gripped the steering wheel tightly with his left hand.

"We dated very briefly," I said.

"Briefly?"

"He landed a job on Wall Street and he broke up with me because he wanted to focus on his career which I understand."

"You weren't heartbroken?"

"No. Maybe a little sad but we both needed to focus on getting our life started."
