"May I help you?" The little red haired girl at the front desk asked, looking up through her glasses. The waiting room was empty, other than the tables holding messy stacks of maternity magazines and the reception desk.
"Yeah, uh, my sister needs to see Dr. Tucker."
"Did you have an appointment?"
"I just called, and I was told she's see her."
The girl looked through the papers on the desk. "Oh, are you Mr. Clifford?"
Michael nodded. "Yeah. My sister, Chelsea, she needs to see Emily."
"Alright. Just take a seat. She'll be ready for you in a few minutes."
Michael walked to an empty seat, and Chelsea followed. They had dropped Wendy off at hers before arriving at the small doctor's office.
"Michael," Chelsea said, squeezing her hands together. "I'm really scared."
The boy looked over to his sister and gave a reassuring smile. "Chels, everything really will be alright. I'll be here for you, Wendy will, Luke will. All of us."
Chelsea looked down at her lap and chuckled nervously. Luke wouldn't be there for her at all. After tomorrow, he'd be out the door in a matter of seconds. And after that, she'd have Calum. Maybe. She'd have Michael, and Wendy, and possibly Calum.
The guilt was eating away at her insides, scratching at her ribcage and trying so desperately to escape. She wanted everyone to know. She didn't want to keep this from everyone she loved anymore. It was literally killing her.
"Are you okay?"
Chelsea snapped back into reality and looked over at her older brother. She used her sleeves to wipe away the stray tears on her cheeks and nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine."
"Well, Emily just called your name. Come on."
Michael stood up and held out a hand for his sister. The two followed the young doctor through a small hallway and into a dark room, with various machines hooked up beside an examination bed.
"Chelsea, hi, hun. It's nice to see you! Your brother called, right? What brings you in?"
Chelsea pulled her sleeves over her hands. "I, uh, I'm pregnant."
The doctor's jaw dropped. "Oh. I was expecting something else. Well, uh, hop on up here and let's check this little peanut out."
Chelsea shot Michael a nervous glance as she climbed up onto the bed and laid down.
"I'm gonna need you to pull up your shirt and hoodie, alright?"
Chelsea did as instructed. The doctor spread the gel needed for the ultrasound around on the girl's stomach, which was pudging out a small amount, but Chelsea just assumed she was bloated or something. As Dr. Tucker picked up the device connected to the big machine and rolled it around the girl's stomach, Chelsea and Michael directed their eyes to the screen. A small little ball was curled up right in the middle of her stomach.
Chelsea heard these quick little thumping sounds. "W-what's that noise?" She asked, slightly worried something was wrong.
The doctor smiled. "That, my dear, is your baby's heartbeat."
Chelsea broke into a grin, which surprised even her. She never knew she could be so excited.
"Michael!" She cried, grabbing onto her brother's hand. "Michael, there's a baby in there."
Her brother nodded, also with a wide smile. "That's my niece or nephew." His eyes were glued to the little bundle on the monitor.
"That, that's my little baby's heartbeat. That baby is mine. Oh my god." Tears filled up her green eyes. Just a few hours ago, she was completely terrified, and something as small as hearing a little beat brought her so much excitement. She noticed the amazement in her brother's eyes, too. They were lit up like a Christmas tree.
"You're far enough along to be able to see the outline of it. Like the neck and the chin, and the little body." The doctor pointed to all of the parts of the child's body, and Chelsea kept squeezing her brother's hand tighter.
"How far along is she, exactly?" Michael asked.
"Chelsea is actually eight weeks and two days. I figured she wasn't quite that far judging by her size." She explained before turning to Chelsea. "Have you had any nausea or anything?"
Chelsea shook her head. The only reason she was suspicious about the pregnancy was from Calum's lack of protection, and her missed period. She'd never been more than a day or two late, so when she missed it completely, she headed straight to the drug store and picked up a handful of tests.
"No morning sickness at all?"
"None." The girl replied. "Is that bad?"
"No, it's completely fine. You'll probably be getting some soon, though. So, take this as a warning." The doctor giggled.
Dr. Tucker gave the girl pictures from the ultrasound as she climbed down from the bed, readjusting the hoodie on her body.
"Thank you, Emily, for seeing her so last minute." Michael said, shaking her hand.
"It's no problem. Take care of that little munchkin, Chelsea. We'll give another ultrasound in about a month. Because of your age, you're fairly high-risk, so we wanna keep a close eye on you and the baby."
Chelsea nodded in understanding, and she and Michael headed back out to the car.
That night, she didn't sleep a minute. She was too excited about the little thing growing inside of her. After today, her life would change forever.
