Chapter 9: Them

Shanay was back and setting on the left side of the couch as Christopher sat on the right. They kept distance between each other. She survived her attack but I still didn’t think I would see her in my office again. I thought by now she would finally send in those separation papers she’s been holding on to.

Christopher told me all about how he found Shanay half died. I can’t say I was happy to see her in my office. If she would have died life would not have been the same for him, so he says. I think he would have gotten through it somehow and I would have helped him through it.

They both sat statue like on the sofa. Shanay was leaning on the sofa arm looking at the floor. She looked different today as if she was trying to turn heads. Her pink halter-top made her breast looked rather large. Her skinny jeans gave her more curves. She had a hint of make up on just to highlight her already flawless and beautiful skin. I think she was making an effort to win her husband back. She even had on pumps; if that doesn’t scream I want you back than I don’t know what does.

Close to death most have made her realize what she had. Girls like her had to lose something to realize it was something.

“You two are very quiet.”

“I guess,” Christopher muttered.

Christopher had on his usually jeans and a t-shirt on. It fit his body nicely. His dark skin complexion went with anything he wore. Three weeks ago I saw him in a suit. He was coming from court and it was a sight to see. The suit fit his body perfectly. I wish I could see what’s under the suit.

“Have you guys been talking?”

Christopher’s bushy eyebrows went in. He had a facial expression for everything and that one meant somewhat.

“More than usual but I would like to know where you’ve been going when I thought you were at work?” Christopher looked directly at Shanay.

From what I gathered from Christopher, Shanay is or was an FBI profiler. I Googled her and she’s one of the best profilers. She had a seventy-eight percent catch rate. That’s twenty percent higher than any other profiler before her time. Washington past wrote an article about her. Ever since she joined the BAU more cases have been closed. She’s highly known and highly recognized just like her husband. Christopher Howard has won more cases than his partner Logan Smith and his counterparts.

They were both moving to the top swiftly. Together they are like a power couple.

“Shanay what happened to your job?” I asked.

“That’s what I would like to know but she didn’t want to talk about it. This was your dream. Are you walking away from it?” Christopher spoke.

“I asked my supervision for a sabbatical and I don’t know if I want to go back,” she explained to both of us.

Christopher raised his eyebrows. I could tell he didn’t understand why she would do that.

“Care to explain?” I asked.

“About six months ago or it may have been longer, I’m not sure. I guess you can say I got an insight on things. I almost lost my life,” Shanay explained.

Christopher who was leaning forward with his elbows on his knees slouched back into the sofa. His facial expression told me he was remembering the day.

Shanay continued to explain, “I witness one of my colleagues get murdered. It could have been me but it was him.”

A tear rolled down her face as she told the story.

“It was a routine bust. Me and two other of my colleagues went into the suspects house. He murdered four women brutally. Raped them, beat them, and burned them. I lead them to him and I can’t help but think if I hadn’t lead them to him Kingston would be alive but the fact is he’s not. Kingston made me feel welcomed when I started at the FBI behavioral analyst unit. I was the youngest and the only female so I felt out of place. Anyway we went into the house with our guns drawn. I screwed up the profile. I overlook one little detail that I never would have missed before. I profiled that it was one person but it was actually two.”

Shanay took a deep breath then leaned back in the chair, “There was a girl already inside the house and we didn’t have time to wait for backup, I wish we had. The partner grabbed me first while aiming my gun at Josh, my other colleague. He pulled my finger back and the bullet hit Josh in his vest. Kingston got hit in the leg. I watched Lawrence Wilder stab Kingston repeatedly. Kingston was stab 12 times right in front of my face. Then they set him on fire. I was pinned and the partner had already removed my gun while Josh was out cold from a hit he took to the head when he fell. There was nothing I could do. I thought I was next. The partner loosened up his hold on me. I head butted him like Chris taught me.”

Shanay reached over and tapped Christopher’s leg. The first gesture I’ve actually seen her give him.

“I took my elbow to his groan and made a move for the balcony door. Instead of opening it like I had planned on, I was grabbed by the shoulders and shoved head first through the glass sliding door. I remembered glass coming down around me than I heard sirens. I don’t remember much. I remember Tonya coming to my side to help me up. She worked for the police department. I did not even want her touching me. I was so angry with her, I still am. I shove her to the ground. On Tonya’s way down I picked pocket her and stole her patrol car keys.”

Christopher chuckled a little bit.

“I was in so much pain; I don’t even know how I made it to Chris’ office. I was so terrified and freaked out. There was only one person I knew who could make it all go away. I hadn’t even notice I was bleeding really badly. I could barely see the road but I made it to Chris’s office in one piece. I walked in Chris’s office and he had this horrified look on his face. Like he was terrified. After that I can’t remember.”

I made a note to mention Tonya at another meeting.

“Christopher do you have anything to add.”

Christopher was leaning so far back with a perplex look on his face. He looked like he wanted to get out of here. He was hiding something I could tell. I was good at spotting lies and when people were hiding things. What Rena couldn’t do I did. One thing she wasn’t good at was spotting a lie and she called herself a therapist.

Christopher managed to get himself together and feel in the blanks of Shanay’s story…

“I remember the day. I was terrified. My wife was standing in front of me with blood rolling down her thighs and onto the floor. She had blood coming from her forehead. I thought the worst. I thought someone had mugged her or raped her. I asked her to tell me what happened but she just kept crying. So I went to her to hold her. Just when I got to her side she fainted and I caught her midway down. I hollered for Logan but he wasn’t moving fast enough so I scooped her in my arms. Logan and I took her to the hospital. I remember being so angry. I wanted to kill who every hurt my wife. I had no clue what had happened until Tonya found us and explained everything she knew. That’s about it.”

I could tell there was more to the story, something he did not care to share. I was going to get it out of him if it killed me. I wanted to hear more but Rena ended the session before we could even get to the juicy part.
