Johnny shoved me towards the window. "Get out!"
I grabbed his arm, pulling him with me. I leaped out the window and heard timber crashing and the flames roaring right behind Johnny. I staggered, almost falling, coughing and sobbing for breath. Then I heard Johnny wheezing behind me, and as I turned to see if he was alright, Dally swore at me and clubbed me across the back as hard as he could, and I went down into a peaceful darkness.
Johnny doesn't die and Dally doesn't get shot, even though Johnny had to go to jail for six months for killing the Soc. They all fight in the rumble and win. After Ponyboy gets his concussion and recovers from it, everything goes back to normal. Then, in the spring of that same year, Dally's sister comes to live with him.
