Chapter 5: Getting To Know You

*Niall’s POV*

After our small group meeting at our spot outside the school, I left with Kate to walk her home. I feel bad for not going home with Blaire because I told her and my mum that I would go home with her but she’s with Zayn anyway, she’ll be safe with him.

“So, about you and Blaire…” Kate said, starting a conversation.

“What about us?”

“Are you an item or something? ‘Cause I keep hearing things in school that the two of you are inseparable and are always seen together. It surprised me that you did not walk with her home.”

“Rumors… No, we’re not dating.” I answered. “She’s my very best friend. We’ve been friends for 15 years. We’re like twins, we grew up together and our parents are very close too.”

“Oh, well alright.” She said then she smiled at me.

“Why don’t you tell me more about yourself?” I suggested trying to make another conversation.

“Well, I’m originally from Wolverhampton. We moved here in Ireland just last week because my dad got transferred. I lost my mom last year; she died in a car accident. She was driving home when this truck with a drunk driver ran over her car and she was dead in an instant. I’m an only child. My favorite color is green and pink. I love to dance and I can play the guitar. Your turn.” She said then she laughed.

“First, Liam came from Wolverhampton too. He moved here just before high school started. Second, I’m sorry about your mom. You did not really have to say it.” I gave her an apologetic smile. “Third, I like the color green too and I can also play the guitar. So, about myself, my natural hair color is brown, I just dye my hair blonde that’s why sometimes you’ll see me with brown roots. Both of my parents are still alive, I have an older brother called Greg. I’ve been here in Ireland since I was born and I love to sing.” I said as we arrived at her house.

“That’s cool. I’ll have to hear you sing some time. Anyway, we’re here!” she said then she went inside and I followed close behind her. “Hi Dad! This is Niall, I met him at school today and he helped me adjust to the new surroundings.” She told her dad as we walked to the dining room.

“Hello, Sir. It’s nice to meet you.” I said as I reached out my hand to shake his.

“Hi, Niall. It’s nice to meet you too and thank you for taking care of my daughter.” He smiled at me then he faced Kate. “Kate, why don’t you two go upstairs then I’ll prepare dinner, alright?” Kate grabbed my hand and then we ran up the stairs to her room.

“Wow, nice room. It’s a typical girl’s room.” I laughed.

“What do you mean by a typical girl’s room?”

“Well, almost everything’s pink and then it’s very clean and organized and then you have lots of closets and drawers. I’m guessing those are either clothes or accessories” I laughed again as I walked to her bed then I sat down beside her.

“Wow, you know so much.” She laughed at me. “So what do you want to do?”

“Uhm, I guess we can watch a movie before we eat dinner?” I suggested.

“Alright. Just go there and pick a movie that you like to watch.” She told me as she pointed to the drawer next to her TV and I did what I was told. I picked Just Go With It. I turned on her TV, placed the DVD inside the player then I pressed play.

“Well, that’s just unusual.” She laughed. “Usually when I let my guy friends back home choose a DVD they would either choose action or horror movies.”

“I’m not like most guys.” I told her and then I sat down beside her. We watched the movie quietly. After the movie was finished, her dad told us that dinner’s ready. Just in time. We got up from the bean bags which were placed in front of her TV then we went downstairs and the delicious smell of freshly made lasagna surrounded the room. We sat around the small dining table and then we started eating.

While we were eating, Kate’s dad asked things about me, the usual things that parents ask whenever they meet their child’s friends. After eating, I helped Kate clean up the table and wash the dishes then I said my goodbyes to them and thanked her dad for the lovely dinner.

As I was walking home, I started to think again if Kate is the girl for me. I mean she’s very nice and beautiful. I thought of what Liam told me. Maybe I should wait for a few more days or weeks so that I’ll be sure of how I feel for her.

I passed by Blaire’s house. I was planning on spending time with her since I did not get to walk her home today. I walked up to her front door and knocked. Her mum answered the door and told me that Blaire’s already asleep and that she skipped dinner today. “Can you please tell her that I passed by? Thanks!” I said and then I went to my house. When I got home, I told my mum that I won’t be eating dinner anymore since I ate at Kate’s house already and then I went up to my room and I lay down on my bed waiting for sleep to come to me.

I thought, What happened to Blaire? She doesn’t usually sleep this early. Usually she sleeps at 10pm and it’s just 8pm and she never skips a meal. I wonder what happened. I’ll talk to her tomorrow and ask her what’s up. I just hope that she’s not mad at me for going with Kate today. I mean, she’s my best friend, why would she be mad if I go with other girls in the school, right? She should understand that I can have other girl friends too.

I continued to think about the things that happened today and I was still wondering why Blaire acted weird today. Did Zayn do anything to my best friend? Because if he did something that hurt her, all hell break loose. After like 30 minutes of thinking, I finally fell asleep. Tomorrow will be another day.
