Scarlett rose from the couch still holding my hand and started to pull me up. I followed her like a lost puppy, into her bedroom. She reached around to quietly close the door behind me.
"I'm happy to sleep on the couch. I don't want to confuse Quinn if she wakes up in the night." I dribbled out. Why was I so nervous all of a sudden, and why was I presuming that I needed to be nervous. Just because I was in Scarlett's bedroom alone with her didn't mean we were going to be doing anything but sleeping. Yet, I was still petrified.
"Don't be silly, it's not very comfortable anyway I've been told." I frowned quizzically, "Dean's fallen asleep out there when he's been babysitting and always tells me I need a new couch. You'd think a decorator would have better furniture." She laughed softly, and it sounded like liquid silk, so soft and musical. It made my heart flutter and my stomach erupt into butterflies.
I was falling hard for this gorgeous creature standing in front of me and didn't have the slightest hesitation in admitting that to myself. Every time she looked at me with those big green eyes and her perfectly pouty lips curved into a smile, my legs turned to jelly. She took both of my hands in hers again and stepped closer toward me. I was about to lean down to kiss her when she ever so slightly shook her head.
"I don't want to be a tease, but can we just get on the same page first." I nodded, as she pulled me toward the bed where we sat on the edge. "I like you, a lot, and it terrifies me. We don't know each other that well yet and it's only been a few weeks, but I really like you. I just don't want to pull you into my mess of a world, have you spend time with Quinn and her fall in love with you, for you to freak out and bolt because it's too much. So if this is too much, maybe now's the time to say so. I don't think I could take a house full of broken hearts again."
Scarlett was looking down to where our hands were entwined, and I was brushing my thumbs across her knuckles. I hated that she felt like I'd ditch as soon as things got too heavy. But as a child of divorce, I knew what it was like to get attached to a parent's new partner for them to be gone just like that, so I understood her apprehension.
"Hey, hey look at me." She looked up and it took everything I had not to say the three words I wanted too, because she was right, it's only been a few weeks and I didn't want to frighten her off. So I said four words instead, "I'm not going anywhere."
She looked relieved. Her shoulders relaxed, and a smile spread easily across her face. I lifted her right hand to my lips and kissed her knuckles. I turned her hand over and kissed the milky skin of her wrist and felt the goosebumps that broke out against my lips.
"Before you go any further with that, which is amazing by the way," she smirked at me and I cheekily wiggled my eyebrows in response, "But since Quinn is just a few rooms away, maybe it's best we cool things for now. Not that I don't want to, it's just the thought of her walking in while we're... well it's stuck in my head now." Scarlett looked at me apologetically and bit her lip with embarrassment.
