Chapter 5

I woke up that morning at about 11:30. I checked my phone to see if Tanner had texted me.

"Em, I'll be over by 2 this afternoon. Can't wait to see you. Love ya.", Tanner had texted half an hour earlier.

I got out of bed and got dressed into a pair of light blue jean shorts and a yellow tank top. Than went into the bathroom and put on some mascara and a little bit of foundation. Than I went downstairs.

"Morning Em.", my mom said as I walked though the kitchen.

"Morning. Tanner said he would come over at 2 today. Oh! I forgot to ask you if he could stay over?", I asked my mom.

Immediately after I asked her that she almost spit out her coffee, "You want Tanner to stay overnight?", my mom asked shocked.

"Yeah! Mom I want to spend as much time with him as I can!", I told my mom.

"Emma I don't know....", my mom answered hesitantly.

"Please mom! I really want to! Please!", I pleaded.

"I'll think about it.", my mom said.

"Okay just tell me what's up before he gets here okay?", I told her:

"Okay, I'll talk to your father.", my mom told me as I walked out of the kitchen to find my brother in the living room playing video games as always.

"Hey so Tanner is coming over today?", Ethan asked me.

"Yeah he is.", I told him.

"Sweet! I should ask him if he wants to play with my some BO2.", Ethan said excitedly.

"Ethan, Tanner wants to spend some time with Emma. He just found out some bad news.", my Mom said from the kitchen.

"What? What happened?", Tanner asked me.

"Ethan don't bug your sister about this.", Mom said.

"It's okay Mom. I can tell him.", I said, "Ethan, Tanner has cancer. And the kind of cancer he has is called leukemia and the doctors haven't found a cure yet. So if they don't find one soon he only has about three to four months left."

"But they'll find a cure for it right?", Ethan said with a worried look on his face. Ethan and Tanner had become really close throughout the year we had been dating and a a little more. Before Tanner had asked me out we were pretty much best friends. We would hang out all the time and talk on the phone a lot. So anytime Tanner came over he would play games with Ethan. I think Ethan saw him as his uncle already.

"Ethan, I hope they do.", I told him. I actually felt really bad for him, he looked so helpless with that sad face. Not the face I usually see on my brother.

"Now Ethan. We don't need to be sad about this though. We need to spend time with Tanner having fun and being happy.", My mom said coming in the living room.

"Right! Cause if we are positive we can get things we need and want!", Ethan said happily restating a sentence from The Secret.- a book that my dad had read and had the family watch the movie.-

"That's my boy.", My mom said, "Hey Ethan would you like it if Tanner stayed over?"

"Really!? Yes!! That would be awesome!", Ethan said excitedly.

"Okay than he can.", my mom said smiling.

"Really! Yes! Thank you Mom! I love you!", I said smiling wide.

I ran upstairs to make sure my room was clean. I made my bed and cleaned up all the tissues laying on the floor from crying so much yesterday.

By the time I was done cleaning it was 1:00. Tanner would be here in about an hour. So I thought I should text him.

"Hey Tanner.", I said.

A few seconds later I got a text back, "Hey Em, I am at the hospital right now talking with the doctors. I'll be there in about 20 minutes..?"

"Okay! Sounds good! See you soon!", I said back.

"Yup! Love ya.", Tanner texted back a second later.

"Love ya.", I quickly texted and than ran downstairs to get something quick for lunch.

I went into the kitchen and opened the fridge looking for something like some ham or something, but I couldn't find anything. I closed the fridge and saw a note taped to the door. It said, 'Em, Be back soon. Went to get some groceries. I left some money on the table if you want to go out to eat with Tanner when he gets here. Love ya! Mom.'

So I went and grabbed the 20 dollars from the kitchen table and went to sit on the couch in the living room and turned on Netflix. I flipped through the kids and family movies and than just went to my favorite TV show called Castle. It's about this guy named Richard Castle who is an author of mystery books and he works with this detective named Kate Beckett. Anyways Castle follows Beckett around and helps with the cases. He also does it to get ideas for his books. But anyways I started watching an episode.

After about 20 minutes of watching my show I heard a knock on the door. It was Tanner. So I got up and went to open the door.

"Hey!", I said as I opened the door.

"Hey.", Tanner said coming inside and giving me a hug. He was carrying a sports bag - most likely with his stuff for the night in it.-

"So my mom gave me some money to go out for lunch if you want.", I told Tanner as we walked up to my room.

"Okay but can we get it to go?", Tanner asked.

"Yeah.", I said.

"Than we can go to our spot in the park.", Tanner said looking over at me.

"Yeah! That sound good!", I said standing in my room doorway.

Tanner put his stuff in my room, than headed out to his car.
