Smile, You're Beautiful

Chapter 17

That night as I was sleeping I heard my phone vibrating on the side table of my bed. I picked it up and looked at who the person was. It was Tanner's mom.

"Hello?", I said mostly awake.

"Emma....*gasp* you need to come to the hospital quick!!", Mrs.D said.

"Why what's going on?", I said.

"Tanner he he's not doing so good.", Mrs.D said.

"Okay I am on my way.", I said.

I got up out of bed and changed as fast as I could. I left a note for my parents telling them where I was going and I grabbed the keys and a room key and left. I reached the hospital five minutes later, but not soon enough.

I ran into the hospital and got into the elevator. Mr.D called her husband who was staying at the hotel down the block from the hospital. He was there right away. As the doors opened I rushed over to the waiting room to find Tanner's mom sitting on the chair crying. As she saw me she stood up and started bawling on my shoulder. I didn't know what had happened but I had kind of figured so I eventually started crying too.

"He.....he didn't make it..", she said into my shoulder.

"What?", I said.

"The doctors tried but he didn't make it through..", she answered.

"What do you mean didn't make it through?", I asked.

"Tanner died, Emma. He died just about 5 minutes ago.", Mrs. D said still crying.

"No...", I said and fell to my knees. I started bawling my eyes out. I didn't know what I was going to do. I sat there bawling for at least 5 minutes. I was in shock. I think Mrs.D might have called my parents because they were there right as I stood up from the floor. My mom ran over to me and just hugged me warmly. She knew how much of a shock this must be for me. My dad just stood next to us rubbing my back.

"I'm so so sorry sweety.", My mom said. I just kept crying in her shoulder like Mrs.D had been doing earlier.

Eventually my parents and I headed back to the hotel. I just sat down on the bed and tried processing this. It was still so much of a shock to me.

The next day we headed back home. The house was as quiet as u have heard it. When Ethan got home though he didn't know what had happened. I was in my room most of the time still trying to process it so my mom explained what had happen. Ethan came straight up to my room and ran in and hugged me. As we were sitting there I heard Ethan start to cry. He and Tanner were so close. Playing video games together and playing football outside. It was like Tanner was part of the family.
