Its my understanding that there has been a lot of toxicity in the voltron fandom as of late. It makes me sad, and less motivated to write.
I was just about to start writing the other day, and while i was looking for inspiration and trying to think of scenarios, i came across several posts about the queer bating seen in s7.
Heres what i have to say, please listen:
The LGBTQ+ community does not recieve the recognition it deserves in entertainment. It derserves this recognition, because every person, no matter race, gender, sexuality etc., deserves to see accurate representation in entertainment. It shouldn't be seen as respect, it should be seen as fact.
So when the poor representation of the gay community was shown in s7.
It was and is heartbreaking. There is literally no denying that the queer bating in s7 was fucked up.As of all I've seen, nobody from the voltron team has spoken out about this.
But as wrong as it is, which it is very, i think that it is also wrong to only see this single, fairly isolated, incident as the entire show.
Do you realize how much good has come from voltron? The amount of people its brought together? The amount of aspiring writers, like myself, who have gained validation and inspiration from the work based of the characters? The sense of community is incredible. Voltron Legendary Defender is a revamped tv show, that has one of the youngest, most progressive demographics.
What happened, was wrong. It can't be justified. There is a lot of toxicity in the community, yes.
But I am going to take a page from the Paladins book, and choose to not dwell on the bad and focus on moving forward.
That's all have to say, this is not to persuade, but when i continue to update this book, i want you to understand why.
Much love rosebuds, over and out
