"You okay?" I asked, glancing over at Phil who was painfully sprawled out on the couch. It was evident where Marcus and his idiots beat him, as the bruises were turning a darker shade of purple.

He looked at me with swollen eyes and groaned. "Do I look okay to you, Dan?" he replied sarcastically, resting his head on the arm of the couch.

I chuckled and walked into the kitchen, grabbing a bag of frozen peas from the freezer. I handed the peas to Phil, who looked at me questioningly. "I don't have an ice pack. Just put it on your ribs. It'll ease the pain a bit."

I sat down next to where Phil's feet laid and sank into the brown couch.

Phil did as he was told and sighed. "My body hurts all over," he mumbled, closing his eyes.

My chest ached with sympathy for him. "I'm sorry," I whispered softly, twisting my hands together. "It was my fault."

He lifted his head up to look at me with a confused expression on his face. "Why?"

"I should have been more careful of where I was going at lunch, or else I wouldn't have gotten the detention. You wouldn't have had to be alone, making it so that Marcus couldn't beat you up." I hung my head. "This all happened because you had to wait for me."

Phil re-positioned himself so that his head was where his feet used to be and leaned his head on my leg. He looked at me with reassuring eyes. "None of this was your fault," he insisted. I stared back into his ocean blue gaze, feeling my face glow pink.

I carefully placed bandages on the scratches that were on his face. I disinfected and wrapped a bandage on a noticeably larger gash on his right arm, as he winced in pain.

"There," I said. "All done." He nodded in appreciation and softly ran his fingers across the band-aids on his cheeks.

"Thank you, Dan," Phil whispered resting his gaze on mine. "And thank you for saving me back there."

I opened my mouth to interject him, but he just put his finger to his lips to shush me. "I'm serious." His eyes slightly widened. "Who knows what they could have done to me if you hadn't been there."

We settled in silence for a little while longer with his head in my lap, clutching a bag of frozen peas on his bruised-up ribs.

My thoughts rushed back to when they were beating him up. I still had a bunch of questions on my mind that desperately needed answers. I scrunched up my brow and tried to search blindly for answers.

Phil's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. "Hey, what's wrong?" he asked, looking at me with concern in his eyes.

I bit my lip, not knowing how he'd react. "I know already asked you this back there, but why do they bully you?"

His face fell as his body stiffened and adverted his eyes away from me. I probably shouldn't have asked that.

I tilted my head and looked at him. "You don't have to say anything if you don't want to. I was just curious."

Phil mumbled something under his breath and covered his face in the crook of his arm. He stayed there for a little longer with his arm on his face.
