I pretended not to notice Roan on his phone as we headed back towards his house. After we'd eaten, we'd laid out under the shade of one the backyard trees, dozing off for a while.
"What?" Roan asked, noticing me looking when I glanced over. He looked down at his phone and rolled his eyes so hard I was surprised it didn't permanently damage his vision. "I'm just texting Ali."
But I could see a quick flash of his Twitter screen as he shifted to hit the lock button. He could text his best friend all he wanted, but it'd be nice if he talked to me too.
"Oh, Garrett!" Mr. Wilson said as we entered the house. "I tried calling your dad's cell. I was hoping he could tell me the name of that wine he let us try last week."
"He probably doesn't have his hearing aid in. Just text him and he'll call you when he notices it," I said. "I don't remember the name. They got it from that liquor store up on the boulevard, though."
"I'll shoot him a text. Are you staying for dinner?" Mr. Wilson asked.
"I already asked him," Mrs. Wilson called from the other room.
"He's staying for dinner," Roan said with a nod. "We're going to my room. Just call us down when it's ready."
"We just ate lunch, and you're already thinking about dinner?" I said as we went up to Roan's room.
He shut the door and kissed me. "I could have a snack in between."
"Um, homeboy, I am a fucking three course meal," I said, gesturing to my body. "The only snack here is your tiny di-"
"Garrett." Roan glared at me. "God, you can't even run with a joke."
"Because my three course mealness is not a joke, it's a point of pride," I said.
Roan flopped onto his bed, hands behind his head. "Either way, you missed your chance last night."
"What if last night I just wanted to cuddle?" I asked, lying down next to him.
"You missed the chance to cuddle on the couch. I know you like couch cuddling better than bed cuddling," he said.
"Listen, I just like having you in my arms with something to prop me up so my back doesn't get sore," I said, gesturing to the lack of anything on his bed that could prop me up. "Let me be a comfortable big spoon."
He closed his eyes. "Yea, sure. But I'm not cuddling with you down there while my parents are running all over the house."
I shook him. "Hey, wake up. We already slept outside. Do you want to go for a walk?"
"Not particularly," he said, forcing his eyes open and stretching a little. "Why do you always want to be out and moving around? You need to learn how to just relax."
I didn't mind relaxing, I really didn't. I just felt lazy after sleeping during the afternoon. It made sense that I was tired after not sleeping well last night, but still. I felt a little groggy from the nap, and going for a walk would be a nice way to wake up.
"Fine, no walk. But can we do something to wake ourselves up a little?" I said, trying to tug him so he was sitting up. "Even an exciting video game would be better than just lying here and trying to keep my eyes open."
