"So, uh," I said, breaking the silence between us. Silas reached over and turned the music down a little, waiting for me to speak. "There's an ice cream place in the south side we usually go to, but we can go to one of the two popular ones in the north side if you'd be more comfortable."

"Ain't afraid of the south side. I know which place you're talkin' about anyways. Ray and I go there sometimes," Silas said. "Cheaper than the north side places, and tastes better too."

"I mean, if you're okay with it," I said.

"South side doesn't bug me," Silas said.

I drove us to the south side, taking us to the ice cream there. I parked the car and the two of us got out, heading towards the line that had already formed at the outside window for ice cream.

"Are you going back home after we eat?" I asked.

Silas shrugged. "Probably. Kaito's mom comes home tonight so I doubt we'll hang out."

"That works. I can drop you off and just head to Jack's," I said.

"Great. You two causin' trouble again without anyone to tell you it's a bad idea," Silas grumbled.

"I really am sorry we hit you," I said, glancing at his arm.

"Quit apologizing. I've had worse. Just keep your fireworks on your own damn lawns," he said.

"Yea, we're going to move those away from people," I said, rubbing the back of my neck. "No need to start a war between Ray and Mr. Waymire."

"Too late for that," Silas said.

"Those dudes are both terrifying and I wouldn't want to mess with either of them. The two of them fighting each other is even scarier though," I said.

Silas just shrugged again. "Ray would win. No doubt about that. Waymire ain't got shit to fight with."

I nearly laughed at that, but managed to choke it back. I could tell by his tone and expression that he was serious when he said that, but he clearly didn't know Mr. Waymire like I did. Still, it was kind of sweet how much confidence he had in Ray.

                "Well, look who it is."

I turned at the unfamiliar voice, alert from the way Silas tensed up a little. He turned as well, the two of us now facing a boy and a girl. I vaguely recognized them from school, but couldn't think of their names. I just remembered the boy being dragged out of lunch once by the security, and was pretty sure the girl had gotten in a fight in the hallway one time.

"Pay 'em no mind," Silas said to me, turning back around.

But the girl grabbed his shirt and yanked him backwards roughly. Silas stumbled a little and I reached out, grabbing his arm to help him catch his balance.

"Ain't going to fight you," Silas said to the girl.

"AIn't going to fight you," she mocked. "Still can't talk with proper grammar? Why am I not surprised. You always were a dumbass."

"Where's your body guard?" the boy asked. "Never could fight your own battles. Always needed your guardian to do it for you. Trashy piece of shit doesn't even have a real dad to hide behind."
