Akira, Jack and I went downstairs. Silas was sitting at the kitchen table with Jill as Kaito made them breakfast.

"Don't eat," I said sternly. "We're going out to eat."

"Maybe I wanted pancakes," Silas said.

"Maybe you don't get a say in that. Go get dressed," I said.

"Pain in the ass," Silas grumbled, getting up and leaving the kitchen.

"Want to get bagels and tea at the coffee shop?" Akira asked Jack.

"Are we having a date of our own?" Jack said. "And here I thought you were a notorious ladies man."

Akira stomped on his foot. "Eat that, asshole."

"That's not very nutritious," Jack said, hopping away from Akira. "Bagels and tea sounds better. Just quit injuring me."

"Have fun on your abusive date," I said.

"Garrett, even if I was attracted to guys, Jack wouldn't even be on my list," Akira said.

Jack crossed his arms, glaring at Akira. "I am very attractive! Garrett, tell him I'm attractive."

"Not my type, Jackal," I said, laughing when he pouted and hit my arm.

Silas came back into the room, dressed in clothes I was assuming he'd borrowed from Kaito. I'd borrowed shorts from Akira but put Silas's hoodie on this morning.

"See you all later," I said, swinging my car keys around my finger and leaving the house with Silas. We'd all agreed to go swimming later in the afternoon, which meant I had time to take Silas out to eat.

"Where are we eatin'?" Silas asked as we got in the car.

"I was thinking sandwiches and ice cream," I said.

He rubbed his arm. "That's what we did after you and Jack burned me."

"In my defense, I didn't burn you. I was just there and didn't stop Jack," I reminded. "But yes, last time I took you as an apology, this time I'm taking you as a date. Sound good?"

"Not as good as pancakes, but I guess I'll cope," he said, snickering when I shot him a glare.

I handed him the aux cord and rolled the windows down. We drove with an easy silence between us, me focused on the road and Silas taking in the view of the outside world.

We got to the sandwich place and I parked, the two of us getting out. We went inside and were seated, ordering tea and looking over our menus.

"Ray texted me last night," Silas said. "Said he's got a friend down in one of the Carolinas, owns a place he rents out. Guess the guy said he'd give it to Ray for a week at a discount."

"You're going on vacation to the Carolinas? That's great, Silas. You can finally go snorkeling," I said.

He rubbed the back of his neck. "He said to invite you, too. It was, uh..." He pulled out his phone, checking his messages. "North Carolina. The place is right on the beach. The guy had a dead week towards the end of the summer, someone cancelled on him for."
