You were seated by the fountain in the royal courtyard. You were not royalty, but your family were high ranking nobles and close friends with the royal family. Your mother was close childhood friends with fire princess Ursa. Your father and mother were the earl and countess of the fire nation capital, so you spent a lot of time at the palace. Azula slightly scared you, so you tried to avoid her as much as possible. Zuko on the other hand, was your closest friend. You had no other friends. You didn't trust anyone else. Most kids your age just wanted to be your friend so that you would buy them anything they wanted because of how rich you were, but Zuko was a prince, so there was no need to worry about materialistic things like such with him. You could drop your guard and just be yourself when you were around him."Hey, (y/n)"
A voice pulled you out of your thoughts. You turned your head to see the person your thoughts had somehow drifted too. A light blush crept its way up to your cheeks as you scooted a little to the side as a gesture for the prince to sit down next to you. He sat on the edge of the fountain next you.
"Hey, Zuko," you finally replied after he was seated next you.
He moved a hand to scratch the back of his neck nervously avoiding eye contact with you.
"Zuko, is everything alright?"
"Uhh, yeah," he seemed to be struggling to find the right words to say, "I-It's just, you know, there's this, you know, there's umm..."
"Yes, Zuko?" you giggled a little at his failing attempts at talking.
"Well, it's just, grandfather is my is holding a gala at the palace in a couple days, and it's just that, well, grandfather said that Azula and I were allowed a plus one, so umm, would you, ummm, want to maybe go with me?" at this point he was bright red, and was looking everywhere but in your direction.
"I thought you would never ask," you jumped on him hugging him. He hesitantly wrapped his arms around your waist pulling you closer to him.
"You have no idea how nervous I was to ask you that," he whispered into your hair.
"Believe me, I think I have a pretty good idea," you giggled hesitantly moving away, but just enough to look him in his beautiful golden eyes. He nervously chuckled alongside you.
"Zuko, I hope you know, that these next few days you won't be able see me," you explained
"WHAT!?!? WHY?" he asked surprised.
"Zuko, it's alright. It's just tradition. These next few days I shall spent getting ready through days of preparation. It would be bad luck if you saw me before the gala," you laughed as he became mildly embarrassed.
"Ha ha, oh," he rubbed the back of his neck with a blush gracing his cheeks.
You leaned in close to him, and lightly kissed his left cheek.
The next few day had to be carefully planned out. Avoiding Zuko was a lot harder than you thought. Although, the days of pampering to get you ready were nice, it took all your will power and focus not to run off and tell Zuko all about it at the end of each day. He had almost caught you twice.
Once as you were headed to your room in the palace, as your family stays there often. He was rounding the corner walking and talking with his mom, you presumed to go feed the turtle ducks in the pond. He was about to round the corner, and you were struggling to get your door open. Luckily you got it open and inside just in time, but your rushed hurry and the slam of the confused to young prince. You heard him tell his mom that he'd catch up with her then a knock at your door.
"(Y/n)" Zuko called to you through the door
"Yes, Zuko"
"Is everything all right? I just saw your door slam shut and thought maybe something was wrong," his voice was filled to the brim with concern.
