She walks down the halls of the school for the last time this year. When she is out of the building, her headphones are popped into her ears, the beat of her favorite song playing. She walks with a hop in her step, her feet slapping the sidewalk to the beat of the drums. Her lips move to the lyrics, and her head bobs slightly. She is, once again, happy. She stops for a milkshake on her way home, telling herself she deserves this after getting the grades she got this year. She takes the detour home, slurping her shake with a twinkle in her eyes. She feels alive. The sound of her sneakers hitting the pavement, nature being a second drum, makes her want to dance, but she refrains. After all, she doesn't want to spill her drink. She jumps up the front steps to her house one at a time. Instead of going inside and cherishing having the house to herself for the next hour, she stays outdoors, taking a seat on the front steps. She taps her foot, slapping her thighs to drum solos.
"Sixty-six days," she thinks to herself, knowing the days will fly over the summer.
