So this episode starts off with a cool fight.
I felt like cringing for Beast Boy when he bragged to Raven about saving her but I still love their moments.
Robin is determined to do everything he can to find Slade, as long as his friends are safe so he decides to keep them out it. Star feels hurt the most by it because at first she feels that she is in the way because Robin had to save her on the mission or she would have died.
In my opinion the way he saved her was really cool. He didn't even hesitate, it's like second nature to him, he's expression didn't change, we could see through out the whole time how much this mission and his friends mean to him. I also adore how quick-witted Robin is in combat.
I find it odd that this episode is about masks and Robin already is wearing a mask and then puts on another one as Red-X.
I feel that it was strongly hinted at us when Robin removed the face from the robot, or a mask if you will. Behind it we see a video of Slade provoking Robin, and it's just as frustrating for us because we want to know who Slade is and remove HIS mask! It just made me squirm inside when he said "Perhaps we should just meet... Face to Face".
(I might be over analyzing this)
The others aren't as concerned for Slade as Robin is. I feel that Robin does see himself as Slade even though he will never admit, and he might imagine what he would do if he was a villain and he might think the worst scenarios possible. They are both skilled in martial arts and are pretty manipulative. That's why he's the only one in the team loosing control over it.
Also I do sometimes perceive Slade as Robin's father telling him that he can do better, he did mention it once, but... Yes Slade is only saying those things to tease him but I see it as a reference. Like when your parents tell you "You can do better" while you already tried your very best and those words really got to him as he is playing them over and over in the back of his mind.
I find it kind of weird and excellent the way they paralleled the two. Robin has an unhealthy obsession with Slade, and Slade has a sick and twisted obsession with Robin wanting to control him. He has an obsession for the whole team but Robin is his main target.
Robin betrays the trust of his friends in order to find out who Slade is. Even uses them and manipulates them and that's really low for Robin, he's supposed to be the leader, the more rational one that sees the big picture, I'm not saying this is out character or it's bad writing- It's excellent because we learn that he is a 3-dimensional character that lets his feelings get in the way.
We don't who Red-X is at first because of the element of surprise and as Titans try to take him out, we're all rooting for them to defeat him, but the feeling of the episode kind of changed our feelings towards him when he saves Beast Boy. Our hearts probably sank for a moment when we found out Robin was behind it.
Star walks into Robin's room and experiences the same struggles Robin did, his words really got to her and she's wondering if he's okay. But unlike Robin she is able to find out who's behind one of the masks.
Somehow Slade already knew it was Robin. Perhaps because Slade sees himself in Robin and could recognize him as if he was looking in a mirror.
It is very cliches for the good guys to pretend to be "bad" for the sake of tricking the enemy, but he did give a good reason for it. I'm not saying it's okay but it's written so well.
But Star is right, they're similar, they're not the same person.
(I think the Red-X powers are just really cool, he could have kept some gadgets and use them in combat.)
