I've mentioned this episode before in one or two previous episode analyzing I did. Could you tell that I love this episode? It's my favorite in season 1.
So this is the first episode where the Japanese opening is played. Fun fact: The Japanese opening is played only when there's funny episodes. The English when there's more serious one.
But I feel like this one is sort of somewhere in between so we need one for a funny and intense episodeSo we get a bland villain that will build up for a very funny inside joke for fans.
He provokes Raven asking her if she's afraid of the light and I just had a feeling that she was going to ask if he's afraid of the dark.
When she starts dragging him under her cloak it seems like something got control of her mind, body, soul or her power. She did mention later on that "SOMETHING got loose". Or she could've just let her emotions get the best of her, she could have just been going through a bad day and she was pushed a little too far.
Now what did Doctor light see in there that traumatized him? Where was he going to go? Why were his clothes ripped? Well do you guys remember in the Raven arc she mention that she's a portal for Trigon. Trigon is practically Satan. Satan lives in hell. I'm guessing little hell minions tried to eat him alive.
Either way, thanks to Robin Raven manages to stop herself and you can tell by the look on her face that she feels very bad for it. Raven is such a complicated character to understand which is why her episodes are my favorite to analyze.
She's still a little on edge and her and Beast Boy don't always see eye to eye and she apparently hisses at him when he asked her what happened.
I feel that Beast Boy could have gone about it differently. I feel that when he said "Raven, what did you do?" Raven felt very judged, it's like he was trying to say "How could you do that?" or "What is wrong with you?". But I think that Beast Boy just wanted to ask if she was okay but since he lacks tact she felt attacked.
Now I mentioned previously while analyzing episode 4 FORCES OF NATURE, I mentioned that Beast Boy is a really nice guy, but if he gives he expects something in return. He tries to be as nice as possible but accidentally annoying others, but still meaning well, that's why he feels victimized. He always opens up to everyone, always sharing his interest, especially to Raven. But she doesn't really give him anything.
She's very reserved, and he feels that if he's nicer he can earn her trust. He also revealed in this episode that if he doesn't know anything about her, he can't trust her and the other Titans tell him that it's okay because she's their friend, but that's not good enough for him.
He's willing to violate other's privacy in order to find out more. He doesn't really see snooping as a bad thing but he pays the consequence and drags Cyborg in Raven's mind with him.
I kind of thought it was poor writing to make Cyborg tag along Beast Boy's journey through Raven's mind. He's just there to keep Beast Boy company because if Beast Boy were talking to himself in this episode it would make us cringe.
Cyborg just didn't have any issues with Raven in this episode so the whole team might have as well joined in, although it would have been way out of character for Robin and Star to go that low as to go through someone else's room.
Well at least their dialogue between Beast Boy and Cyborg has a lot of comic relief to it.
The design and creativity for Raven's mind is amazing!
It does look a bit like hell: Basically where Raven is from. But as viewers we don't know that yet. It has a little sci-fi, dark psychedelic feel to it. I have a huge appreciation for darkness. Also I'm starting to wonder if those little demon birds are the ones that chewed up Doctor Light before. I know they're in Raven's mind not in hell but we don't know what the Teen Titans Universe views as hell so they could be in it.
Then Pink Raven arrives. The music completely sets the mood for this scene. It's really unsettling for us to see Raven smile like that, being bubbly and wear a bright pink cloak. Because we're used to seeing her as a dark, gloomy person. They enter a happier and fluffier world but if we pay close attention to the design in the background it's still a little creepy.
We just saw a pink Raven laughing, then we see the real Raven laughing but not on purpose. More like she was being controlled, just like before when she got angry "something got loose" and probably controlled her. Now we see that whatever is happening to that Raven is happening to also this Raven and that is a trigger warning for first viewers that it's not good and suspense starts to build up.
Beast Boy and Cyborg get ditched by pink Raven, Beast Boy is angry with her and the next Raven they meet is grey - the timid one. Beast Boy yells at her and she starts crying, he apologies but it's like she couldn't hear him. A grey maze appears surrounding them. Symbolizing perhaps that Raven is hard to figure out something or someone really doesn't want them to go there right now. Raven also admits that there's something really dark about her and that she thinks Beast Boy doesn't like her.
The thing that annoys me so much about this scene is that Beast Boy was trying to tell her that it wasn't true but he stopped himself and for once there was nothing that interrupted him.
Then we meet green Raven (Ben 10). Which is Raven's very tough side. Then grey and pink show up ad Beast Boy passes out. When I first saw that scene I laughed so hard.
The real Raven shows up and is not amused.
I have to say I wasn't surprised in the Raven arc when she said that Trigon is her father because she looked at Trigon when she said she has issues with her father, it was just too obvious.
Raven needs to fight Trigon forcing Beast Boy and Cyborg out of her mind otherwise they may never get out. Cyborg and Beast Boy stay, he ends up saving her and they have a cute BBRae moment.
This moment is very important to me. Because I feel that when they are alone they are able to genuinely communicate with each other. For a moment us viewers forgot hat Cyborg was there too, he interrupts them stating that they need to help him battle.
They get out of her mind acting innocently as if nothing big happened. They have a better understanding of each other and have learned to kind of meet half-way, though they don't know each other well enough yet, it's still a great character development. Great episode.
