I got my lunchbox out of my locker and walked with Harris, Max, and Kyle to the lunch table.
"So who are you going to the dance with?" Max asked as we sat down.
That was the dreaded question of the day.
"You know Leigh?" I asked.
"Duh I do. She's my neighbor. And y'all would be a cute couple."
"Leigh!" He hollers across a couple of tables.
"Oh god. Max shut up." I said, but Leigh had already looked at us.
"Your going to the dance with Conner?" He shouts so the whole side of our cafeteria can hear it. She laughs, and covers her mouth trying not to laugh at my humiliation. She nods.
"God Max I hate you." I mumbled as him and Leigh talked. I had turned my head away from them. I looked at Leigh.
"Nina won't shut up." She mouthed.
"Same with him." I mouthed back, pointing at Max.
Our lunch conversations weren't spoken just mouthed so it was between just us.
She turned away to talk to her friends but I kept staring at her. I didn't have a crush on her but she was pretty.
She noticed me and gave me a confused look.
"Nothing." I mouthed, and I talked to Harris and Kyle for the rest of lunch.
We got back to class, and by now Max had told all my friends.
In math, I had class with my ex, but friend Marie. She was Leigh's best friend also.
"I heard you and Leigh are going to the dance!" She whispered to me.
"As friends. And will someone say something to me besides 'your going to the dance with Leigh?' It's all I've heard today."
"Conner. I heard your going to the dance." Mrs. Smith told us in front of the whole class.
"See." I whispered to Marie.
"Yeah. It's all everyone's been talking about today." I announced.
"If you don't mind me asking, who's the special lady?" She asked.
"Leigh White." I announced, "but we're-"
The rest of my sentence was drowned out by all of my classmates freaking out and screaming.
"Quiet down. Are you dating this Leigh girl?" Mrs. Smith inquires.
"No." I told her.
"But he loves her!" Max shouts out.
"I do not! If anything she likes me!"
"Liar you love her!" He shouts.
I couldn't wait to get out of this class.
