Harry graciously accepted the gift and in exchange he gave the man a small fragment of red stone.

after all studnts were entitled to have their familiars at school and bring them where ever they go, harry found out it was Dumbledore who discouraged bringing familiars ti school saying they distracted the studnt.
Studies however show otherwise, familiars store magic and help focus via proximity.
