In Ullal, Deep in the Night

Rohini brooded as she looked at the sea from the balcony in her room. A half moon hung in the sky lighting up the dark waves selectively, as they rolled and crashed against the shore. It was slightly chilly outside and she shivered; the soft cotton of her night dress not doing much to keep her warm.

The warmth in her soul however crept up as her lips curled into a smile, she remembered the soft kiss outside her room a while ago. It had taken her by surprise, though she could still feel it's lingering presence on her lips.

First time. This had been the first time since everything in between, that they had kissed. Leading her to realise how she had missed him all the while; how ready she was to usher in warmth, love and happiness in their lives once again; and how much she craved to be with him. And she knew that he felt similarly. True, they had hugged and held each other in comfort, in the bed.

But this went much beyond. It was like magic, a reaffirmation of their love for each other. The message had been clear to both - they were now together. They belonged to each other. And that their love had not succumbed.

His lips had been soft and gentle over hers, a wee bit insistent as he had probed for entry. Rohini blushed as she remembered herself crashing against his chest, her arms going around his neck as she had deepened the kiss wilfully, allowing themselves the time and the intimacy.

The magic of the moment had been broken when they heard Roshan yell from the other side - "You two! Get a room. The corridor is too hot for comfort."

Nikhil thundered as he held Rohini close to him "I was trying to get one ... you buffoon!"

Roshan had grinned wildly at them and then slammed the door shut. Rohini had sighed as she had hugged Nikhil tighter; he had looped his arms around her waist in turn and had murmured - "Mood killer!"

Rohini had looked up at him and whispered - "There will be further moments Nikhil. They are just happy for us and to be with us."

His irritation had given way and his eyes were gentle again - "I know. I know. But ..."

He had then walked her to her room and said goodbye. For the night only. Hoping that he would be in her dreams, as she would be in his.

And here she was now, sitting in the balcony, thinking about him. About all that he had gone through all these months. Misunderstood, lonely and heartbroken. Almost a mirror image of what she had been all this while. Perfectly balanced they were together, this way.

In every way conceivable.

Rohini shook her head. This was however not how she wanted them to be. Yes, there had been losses. But deep within, she knew that there was much more to gain. Together, they had sifted through all the issues and managed to uncover their love, which had for all this while been hidden under the garb of loss and hatred. Nikhil had taken the first step towards ensuring that normalcy; Rohini knew she would take the next ones. And after that, they would take all the steps together through everything, cheek by jowl.

They needed to heal and that would happen only when they were together as a whole. The two broken parts of an universal jigsaw puzzle. Her constellation of stars to his universal completeness, his boundary less existence. She knew she was ready. She also knew that he would be there beside her always, to hold her hands and guide her through the circle of life. He had seen it in his eyes.

A gentle wind wafted through the balcony and Rohini looked ahead at a bloom of sea clouds hovering over the horizon, their reflection shimmering silver over the waves far away.
