Okay Hemmings, you could do this. I reach for the top of her fence and lift my feet up climbing up, I throw my case over hoping it landed safely but only made a crashing noise. I go higher and feel wobbly at the top, I try to grasp anything to hold onto me but then I hit the bumpy surface.

Ow! I fell into a bush.  The rustling leaves make more noise and I quickly pull myself up and brush my knees. I walk over to the back and pick up a pebble and throw it at her window up making a clinking noise.

No response.

I pick another one up and threw it again. I look up to see the pebble flying back at my face.

“Shiz.” I rub my forehead.

Could she already be asleep? I mean it’s only 11 at night…

That’s when I take out my guitar.

“Oh Kaylee, you are the one for me. The only one who gets me right? The one who never judges me. The one who laughs at my corny jokes.” I have absolutely no idea what I’m singing but I keep going, “And it’s hard to find myself after all we’ve been through. But I know that I can’t just let you go. Kaylee, I know that you are the one for me. I know that you are my shining star and the one who-“

“Will you shut your pie hole and get to sleep kid!” I hear a neighbor yell from next door.

I stop strumming and look up from desperation.  Her light’s on! She opens the window and looks down at me. Oh how beautiful she looks half sleep.

“Luke? What are you doing here?” she hisses at me.

“I’m here for you. I won’t leave until you explain to me why you broke up with me!” I say bravely.

“Just go home! You shouldn’t be out here at midnight. My dad will call the police if he saw you!” she says back shakily.

“I won’t give up on you that easily. I came all the way here just for and I won’t leave whether you tell me to.” I strum my strings lightly.

“Please just –oh my god.” She looks back at her door. “Fine. I’ll be down there in a minute.”

Do I believe my ears? She’s actually coming down! I stand there waiting for her with a smile on my face.

I finally hear her foot steps and she appears out of the darkness in her pajamas and fuzzy slippers.

“Now what do you want?” she whisper/yells.

“What do I want? It’s you obviously. I want us to get back together.” I try to reach for her hand.

“Us? There was never an us, Luke. We were just good friends who liked each other but that’s gone.” She jerks her hands back.

“But what did I do? I’m not that awkward.” I say softly.

“Luke listen, I really like you but-“she stops herself.

“But what?”

“But my dad. He doesn’t really like you...” she looks crosses her arm.

“Why? I’ve been nothing but nice to him.” I say confused.

“That’s the thing, he doesn’t think you’re man enough for me…” she avoids eye contact.

“What?” I yell.

“Shh!” she puts a finger over my lips.

“Not man enough for you?” I hiss between her fingers.

“Yes. As intimidating and tall, edgy looking you can pull off, but once you start talking... it all goes down the drain. And I’m not saying you’re boring.” She says awkwardly.

I cannot believe my ears. She basically said I’m a goody two shoe.

“What? Am I too nice for him?” I question.

“Being nice isn’t a bad thing. It’s just the last time you were over my house and my dad was there, you hit your pinky toe against the door and you apologized…to a door.” She says.

“That was only once!” I look down at my feet.

“Actually it was twice.” She corrects me. I meet back up with her eyes.

“Okay so let me get this straight. Your dad won’t let me date you because he thinks I’m too polite?” I raise my brow.

“No. It’s just you’re too, what’s the word. Weak? He doesn’t think you can be mature enough and although you are quiet at times, you’re childish and can’t really take a joke that he says.  He just doesn’t think you’re the right guy for me. He believes I need a tough and more eligible guy not some teenage musician nerd.” She breathes out.

As much as I hate to admit it, she’s right I am a pathetic loser. Although she didn’t say it, I know that’s what she was trying to decode.

“No.” I finally say.

“Huh?” she looks up.

“I won’t let him get in the way. I will show your father, that I am worthy enough to take care of your heart.” I say seriously.

After a few moments of silence, she finally takes out something from her pocket and hands it to me.

“If that doesn’t work out then try this place for now. It’s where most guys like you go.” She turns around to leave. “I’m sorry Luke. Bye.” And with that she left me standing there with the card in my hands.

I look down at it.
