“What do you mean I don’t qualify?” I question almost upset to get up from my seat and stomp out of here dramatically.

Well it wasn’t much of a surprise.

“This job is for highly trained swimmers who took lessons and preparation. You need to know your ways and what you’re doing to be a lifeguard. It’s literally in the title; Life-guard. Someone’s life could be counting on you. It says in your resume, you can’t even perform CPR on anyone. ” The head diver, Larry stacks my folder and hands it back to me.

“But this was my last application to find a job. I can prove to you I can do this. I’m a good swimmer.” I sigh. “I can never get hired for any type of work.”

He leans back in his chair, puts his feet up on the table and thinks for a while caressing his chin as if he had a beard. His biceps flex that are very tan. He looked sunburned, almost like a lobster. I’m guessing he stays out in the sun every day. Maybe this job isn’t right for me if it would result me into having sunburn every day.

“I’ll tell you what,” he sits up. “I will give you a practice dive in the water.”

“That means I got the position?” I beam.

“No. “

I frown.

“The practice dive means, if you can dive into the water and save a victim from drowning in five minutes timing. Then you’ll get it.” Larry stands up. I get up as well.

“Now?”

“No, on Christmas.” his voice drips with sarcasm as he leads me out the room.

We keep walking until we reach the front of the beach outside. The beam from the sunlight blocks my view as we get to the boardwalk where we can see all the people in the water. Larry tips down his sunglasses and he scans the area with his eyes.

“Do I start now?” I ask impatient.

“We have to wait until someone has to be in the need of help or drowning.” He rolls his eyes.

I nod and look ahead at the view. Whoa, there are so many hot babes here in their bikinis. At least I’ll be thankful if I had to save their lives by doing mouth to mouth. My patience level was growing thinner because of this.

That’s when I hear a whistle blow and someone screaming.

“Column now is your chance!  There’s an old man out there drowning! Go!” Larry takes out his timer and starts timing.

“Old man?! Can’t I wait for someone else? Preferably a girl?” I start to pace towards.

“GO!” He pushes me out into the sand.

Okay it’s now or never. I have to do this. I pull off my shirt in full fierce mode; I struggle to get it off me at first but then finally stripped it off. I dive into the water and swim across the bank to search for the man.  I push my body up against the surface to find a chubby man flailing his arms up and yelling for help on the other side. I swim as fast as I can to him. When I finally reach him, he’s still in shock.

“AH. AH. AH. SOMEONE GET ME OUT OF HERE. I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA DIE NEXT WEEK NOT TODAY.” His voice hovers loudly splashing the water rapidly in my face.

“I’m here! Do not worry sir,” I grab his hand and try to pull him in pressure. Instead he sinks down. I think he’s gonna officially drown from now on. Oh gosh, time is running out. I don’t know what to do!

That’s when I hear someone jump into the water and swim quickly over to us.

It was none other than Larry. He swam past me on his board and rushed to hold the man up on the board. We all swim back to the shore and I was quite disappointed in myself.  Larry laid the guy down and looked up at me in annoyance. He gestures for me at the man.
