Chapter One - Day In My Shoes

Chapter One -

Ms. Jenkins wants me to buy her more hair dye and facial cream , ha like thats helping her any . Ms. Jenkins is my orphanage owner , but that doesn't mean anything to her infact this gives her an accuse to be lazy and gain five pounds each day . She always says once she finds a good looking man she's dumping us and getting the next flight to Hawaii, I dont think thats anytime soon with her looks and attitude . Since i'm the oldest at the orphanage i'm the one who takes care of the others and does all the shopping for them , but I can't get much with the thirty bucks she gives me , thats never going to be enough to feed and clothe at least forty kids .

I walk to the nearest department store trying to make this visit fast as it can be . People give me looks as I walk past them but I just look ahead of me and ignore it , i've learned to deal with the strange looks as i got older . Walking to the beauty part of the store , I get the cheapest supply of facial cream and hair dye before walking to the kid section , pulling out a crumbled paper from my jeans I read off the list .

Leo - shoes , jacket , crispy treats . (A/N : bold lettering means the kids wrote it )

Lucas - story book , blanket , jacket .

Katie - dress , medicine , hair bows please .

Lydia - hat , toothbrush , cereal

Mark - towel , pillow , toy

Anthony - bring me candy .

Jemima - medicine , movie , treats .

I ended up getting katie's and Jemima's medicine , Lydia's toothbrush , Mark's pillow , Lucas jacket and blanket and Leo's jacket . Walking to the check out line I went to the first open cashier I see open , which just happened to be Sally , she always cared about the kids and time to time gave me something extra to give them .

"How's Jemima doing ?" she asked

I give a standard nod and smile briefly while placing the items from the cart on the bench , Sally just smiles sadly while carrying on the conversation with her self .

"That poor girl is going to end up in the hospital again , if Ms. Jenkins can't get her lazy bum off the sofa "

A chuckle leaves my lips as I start picking up the plastic bags , Sally pulls out some Walkers original toffe and places them in my hand .

"That's for Anthony , I bet that boy asked for candy again , he sure has a sweet tooth "

I walked out of the store walking to the place I have called home for the past six years of my life . 'Anwen's Founders of orphanage kids homes' , yep . Everything was okay , untill about the time I got there Anwen Jenkins suffered from a heart attack and died leaving her only daughter Beatrix Jenkins to look after us . Why not just leave us to fend on our own ? That would have been the same that we are doing now anyways .

The door was already open which scared me lots , seeing as any of the kids could have been hurt or taken so I run up the steps to see Leo holding the door open , for me ? I question in my head , over the years Leo has gotten quite attached to me hes only five and already looks out for me and trys to protect me when I have nightmares . That kid barely talks just like me so are actions and eye contact is how we talk to each other , I often feel like a bad influence to him and the reason he doesn't talk lots like his brother he seems to never keep his trap shut .

After I hand out the presents I got for the kids I went to Ms. Jenkins 'private room' by the office and slam the facial and hair products onto the cupboard . I get a rather loud noise coming from her room signaling I woke her up from her four p.m nap , I smile evilly to myself before stomping up the stairs to my room making sure she can hear every one from her room . sloping into my uncomfortable bed I lay there just looking at the battered walls before a tug is felt on my arm , of course Leo is there hugging me as much as he can , his face buried in my shirt .

Picking him up I sit up myself and lay him in my lap , he closes his eyes most likely tired from what ever his evil and restless brother made him do today . Theres a knock at my door and I simply look to see katie looking scared holding her cast covered arm by her chest , I just look at her before opening up my arms and she comes running towards me , jumping on the bed and making sure she hugs me tightly .

"Ms. Jenkins is scary again , can I sleep in here tonight ? I hate having to sleep in the downstairs dorms with her " she cries into my shoulder

I nod my head and wipe her eyes before she smiles and runs out of the room the get her things from her and Catrionas room . I unravel myself from Leos grip and place him uder the covers before puliing out some extra pillows , blankets , towels and whatever I could find because I knew half the kids were going to be in here tonight hiding from Ms. Jenkins drunken ego .

Katie came back with Lucas , Anthony , Lydia , Catriona , Mark , and Eilidh . all of them had there own blankets and pillows with them and we made a secure feeling fort of bed around the room , before a stumbling Jemima made it to the room who I picked up instantly and put in my bed next to Leo , while I slept on the floor next to them holding Leos hand in mine .

That was a day in my shoes .

Dear diary ,

i'm writing in you after all the kids fell asleep, i am very knackered also , but I refuse to sleep because I hear the crashing of beer bottles from downstairs , and kids might need me throughout the night.

Tomorrow Crays and I will take some of the kids to St. Margots orphanage a few miles down . The kids that really need to get out of here and have a family take care of them , Crays will take the boys in the morning and I will take the girl group at night .

Funny how he thinks I can still get adopted , i'm sixteen , basically two more years untill the state allows me to live on my own , Crays however still has a chance hes fourteen and is a good kid .

Ugh Crays just came in with a few kids with tears flowing down there cheeks , I hate you Ms. Jenkins .
