City Lights

When I look at the sky I wonder
I wonder what's really there
From my perspective it's just dark, with a light here and there
Nothing much to look at, and mostly ignored
But what's really under there?
Without all the city lights
Are the pictures I've seen in books really real?
Or are they just an illusion?
What if they really are as beautiful as the pictures show, or even better still?
What if we take our sky for granted?
What if we misjudge it?
What if underneath all these city lights is something truly unforgettable?
What if it takes your breath away?
Is it a beautiful personality hidden by a plain face?
Maybe the colors are something we can only imagine, from our perspective
Under these city lights
Maybe the sky lights up the world around us
Maybe it ignites the imagination
Maybe it is powerful enough to set a fire in our hearts that can never be put out
One day I will see it
And maybe it will do that for me
But what if
What if I have conjured up something that's not really there?
What if I am disappointed?
What if I am underwhelmed?
What if it will never meet my expectations?
But
What if
It does?
What if it exceeds my greatest imaginings?
Should we really let the fear of something not meeting our hopes keep us from pursuing it?
Should we really let that fear hold us back?
How many of us will never allow our hearts to be overwhelmed with beauty because of our fears?
Perhaps that is my greatest fear of all
That my fear will hold me back
Why must fear hold such a tight grip on our hearts?
Why must the darkness close in on us?
But
What if
We found a way to break free?
What if we found a way to find our fears and break them apart until there is nothing left?
What if once we break free, we see something we have never seen before?
What if we realize the colors around us are brighter than we ever dreamed?
What if the sky is just waiting for us to let go and allow it to show us its secrets?
We will never know what is truly hidden beneath unless
