Powerful Women

So many powerful women

So many powerful voices

All throughout history

So many powerful stories

That we will never know

They didn't do it for money

They didn't do it for recognition

But recognition is what they deserve

And recognition is what they will never receive

Though their voices were mighty

And their triumphs great

We will never know their names

They kicked, screamed, clawed, and fought

To get to the top and make a change

To change the world and to change lives

Changes that make our lives better, even today

We will never know how many lives they saved

We will never know how many lives they improved

We will never know just how much they impacted our lives

They were formidable women

Who never gave up

Despite the trials they went through

Imprisonment, asylums, beatings, death

They trudged forward

Never stopping

Always fighting

Although they worked so hard

Their voices were stolen from them

Whether silenced altogether over the course of time

Or stolen by men who claimed their advances and work for themselves

Advances in medicine, literature, inventions, legislature and rights

"Spinster"

"Hysterical"

"Eccentric"

"Stubborn"

They heard whispers wherever they went

None of them positive

But still, onward they went

So, here's to the unnamed women

The ones who will never be known

The ones who deserve fame and acclaim but will never receive it

Here's to the Powerful Women

Dedicated to my great grandmother.

She was a powerful woman that would be ahead of her time even today. I never knew her, but I've been told many stories of her by my mother. But, unfortunately, that's all I'll ever know. Even though she changed legislature and "made history," I may never know anything else about her. All I can find on her is one piece of a hearing presented before the U.S. Senate in Washington D.C. She was the only woman in the 300 page hearing. She deserves articles, books, and recognition, but her name was hidden because she was a woman. I hope to one day live up to her legacy.
