~Katie's POV~
I take a deep breath as I make my way to Kyle who is walking out of school. I run up to him and grab his wrist, guiding him in front of the building so I could talk to him after my long day at school.
"Can we talk?" I ask, looking into his blue eyes that I used to love, until yesterday when I realized the same blue eyes never loved me back.
"Yea, we are talking." Kyle says.
"Well... I don't want to date you anymore." I sigh, letting the words pile out of my mouth like a 'word vomit.' Wow, I really do watch Mean Girls too often.
"Why not?" He asks, tensing up a bit.
" I don't think we are right together. We barely ever spend time together. It's best for me if we take a break." I sigh.
"We spend time together all the time!" Kyle exclaims. "Plus what do you mean we aren't right together?"
"I don't know, I just don't think I feel the same about you as I did before. I realized you never even pay attention to me."
"I pay enough attention, you selfish brat!" He shouts. I see a few heads turn and feel more eyes on me. "It's Matthew isn't it? You think he's better than me right? Have you been dating since that 'project?'" He yells, using his fingers to make quotation signs in the air. "I saw you guys meet up every day. I'm not that stupid."
"No we didn't cheat and no it's not because of him." I lie. "Leave him out of this and stop being a drama queen."
"Don't lie." He says quieter. "I didn't want to say anything in front of the guys 'cause they told me I should've broken up with you last year when you quit the cheer team. I told them you just needed time. You've changed into a nerd Katie." Kyle says. Anger builds into his eyes.
"I didn't think you would actually cheat on me though. I'm the popular one and you cheated on me." he laughs.
We go back and fourth yelling, me explaining and trying to calm him down, and Kyle cussing me out and saying hurtful things about me which I start to believe.
I see the anger build up in his eyes as he raises his hand. The next thing I know, my cheek is burning from the contact with Kyle's palm.
"What a loser. You'll be sorry." He whispers before walking off.
I touch my burning face with my hands as I my eyes turn into clouds and start to rain. I dash to my car and attempt to fix my makeup and stop crying so I'm not a mess while driving. Before I can leave, I hear a tapping on my window. It's Matt in a football uniform.
He opens the passenger door and brings me into a big hug.
"We need to talk." He whispers. I nod.
"I'll come over after practice. Be safe okay?" He asks. Next he simply gets out of the car and runs to the football field.
I take off and get to my house in a few minutes.
I run upstairs and and fix my runny makeup and put my hair into a side ponytail. I finish my math homework and go through my history flashcards before I hear the doorbell. I run downstairs where Matt and Dad are talking.
"We're going to be upstairs." I say quietly as I guide Matt to my room.
"I'm so sorry Katie. I saw everything and I feel horrible. You didn't need to break up with him because of me." Matt says guiltily.
"Thank you." I whisper. "Thank you for helping me see that he's a jerk." A tear slips out of my eye, but Matt is quick to wipe it with his thumb without breaking eye contact. He wraps his small yet muscular arms around me as I cry into his shoulder for a few minutes.
"He's not worth it." He soothes, moving a strand of hair out of my puffy eyes. I look up to him and he looks sad and his eyes are slightly glossy.
"I don't like seeing you sad." He mumbles under his breath. I wipe my face and give him my best smile.
"Don't worry. I'm fine." I tell him. The two words that girls use to create the biggest lie, 'I'm fine.' A lie to themselves and a lie to others.
"You sure?" He asks skeptically. I nod my head and let out a deep breath.
"So do you want to watch a movie or something?" I ask, trying to change the subject. He nods as I open up my laptop and go to Netflix. We end up watching Parent Trap. I lean my head on the top of my bed and Matt sits on his stomach. I giggle at how funny they are, yet Matt looks kind of zoned out... Or maybe he really likes this movie.
"Katie?" Matt asks, pressing pause. "I was wondering if you would maybe want to go out some time?"
I let out a sigh and think. "I just broke up with Kyle an hour ago. Ask me again later." I feel bad for taking the hope and sparkle out of his eyes, but I can't right now.
"I get it." he sighs.
A few minutes later, my phone goes off.
You're gonna be sorry. I hope you and Matthew are very happy
Kyle
I don't answer and instead I turn my phone off. I'm not gonna tell Matt either. What could he possibly do?
Oh wait...
