As I was walking to the dormitory I was caught up in my thoughts -which was proven by the fact that I once again tripped on that one faulty step on the staircase leading away from the great hall- and unaware of my surroundings.
I walked past numerous people without a greeting or a smile which was very out of character for me.
When I stood in front of the painting of fat lady I realized: 'I don't know the password.'
"Password?" The fat lady requested while looking at me down her nose.
"I... I do not know it, but I'm supposed to sleep at the gryffindor dormitory tonight." I said and rubbed the back of my neck in an awkward manner.
"Lies! I know all my couragious gryffindors. The only ones I do not yet recognize are the first years and you clearly aren't one of those." The fat lady said, crossing her arms.
"But I am a transfer student. I haven't been given the password." I said, feeling annoyed at how helpless I was in this situation.
"You must be one of those nasty slytherins! I will not allow one of you to enter here, not after the last prank one of you pulled. The commonroom and the dormitories smelled like skunks for weeks." The fat lady screeched.
Suddenly someone opened the portrait from inside. A girl with curly brown hair stepped outside. "Hi, you must be Selenia. I just received a letter that you would be waiting here. My name is Hermione Granger, I was appointed the gryffindor perfect this year. I have been intructed to guide you and show you around." Hermione had that all too familiar smile on her face when she didn't yet know if she trusted someone. She sounded proud as she led me through the door and into the common room.
"Congratulations on being appointed perfect." I said, knowing that Hermione was proud of this.
"Thank you, I'm hoping to make head girl on my seventh year." Hermione smiled. "So this is the common room of the gryffindor house. Here we relax and have fun with our friends. Many of us do our homework here. A good tip for you to know is that the best time to study here in the common room is very early in the morning or during quidditch practice. That's when the room is most empty and silent. At other times I would have to recommend the library." Hermione explained. She was a natural at this perfect student thing.
"Good tip." I nodded. 'There is no way I'm waking up early to do my homework. I guess dad and uncle Ron weren't exaggerating about auntie Hermione's work ethic.'
"So the left stairs lead to the girls dormitories and the stairs on the right lead to the boy's dormitories. First floor houses first and second years, second floor third and fourth years and on the third floor there is us, assuming that you are a fifth-year like me, and so on and on." Hermione explained while leading me to the stairs. "Hello Colin. Did you have a good summer?" Hermione asked quickly -to be polite of course- as we passed the small photographer.
"Yes it was a lot of fun. Glad you're the perfect, Hermione. Oh and hi Selenia." Colin answered.
I waved back at him before stepping onto the first stair of the girl's dormitory. For a moment I held my breath thinking that the stairs would turn into a massive slide -like it did when boys tried to enter the girl's dormitory- because I wasn't officially a student.
However I was quick to release that breath as the stairs didn't show any change.
"You are a fifth-year right?" Hermione asked.
"Yeah. Well technically no." I said.
"What does that mean?" Hermione asked with a raised brow.
"I should be in fourth-year but I skipped a grade." I said.
"What!?" Hermione twirled around in the staircase with her brows bunched together: "How did you manage that?"
"Well I was in the first grade for two months but then they realized that I was wasting my time in classes, I couldn't learn anything new from. So they just switched me to second grade. I've always been at the top of my class." I said and nervously twirled a hair around my finger. I remember telling auntie Hermione about being let into second-year too early and how proud and confused she had been.
"Oh, it's just... I asked to be allowed to skip a grade numerous times in my first-year and I was never allowed." She was visibly frustrated by this.
"Maybe it's not allowed at Hogwarts. I was in Beauxbatons remember?" I consoled her even though I knew I was lying.
She seemed to be cheered up by this: "Oh, that must be it. So have you been sorted yet? I noticed that you don't have a house crest on your robe."
"No I'll be sorted tomorrow. I feel like I'll be sorted into gryffindor."
"Well that's nice, hope you're right." Hermione said and then opened a door. "This is the fifth-year girl's dormitory. The bed on the far left is yours." Hermione said, pointing at the bed. "Mine is next to it and hey, your trunk has arrived."
"Great." I said and checked what I had. The basic brown trunk had school books and other supplies and three robes packed in it. A book caught my eye.
I pulled it out of the trunk and saw a note slip out from between the pages and slide onto the floor.
"Why has Dumbledore given you a book?" She asked as she handed the note back to me.
