Sweet relief flooded my system the second I stepped out of Iarhus grounds, soothing every muscle in my body. It seemed that replacing a sweat-wood-human-smell mix with anything could only be refreshing.
Which was needed, after the stunt that I had just pulled.
Kendra and I sighed and stopped from our walk home, looking up into the sky. I could feel a slight frustration in Kendra, although I knew she would thank me later. I had to stop Dante and her from going further, and still couldn't quite believe that I had even been able to do it all. Especially after they touched.
Delaying even one process of the Bond had never been heard of.
Then again, my gifts were unheard of too.
Albeit it also made me feel remorse and compassion for Kendra—I knew she would thank me in the long run. She had a good relationship with her grandmother, the Supreme Elder, and if she ever found out that Kendra and a human were promised, she would shun her granddaughter without a second thought.
There was not a single doubt in my mind—Madame Esmara was ruthless when it came to rules and her family had to abide by them just as much as everyone else did.
If she found out, only chaos would ensue. Even if it meant depriving Kendra of true happiness for a little while—I wouldn't be a Maecena if I didn't at least try and give her more time to figure out what she wanted to do.
It was all I wanted for her—more time.
"I feel great," she said, a smile forming on her heart-shaped face.
Her dark brown locks blew out of her face, bouncing on her shoulders. I pushed away the remorse and instead concentrated on intensifying the happiness that my success had stirred up. She latched on to it without really knowing and sucked it into her.
"Me too."
Who knew a little fresh air could make someone so happy?
Oh, yeah.
Probably any wolf with a good nose that just came out of a stuffed building full of stinking humans—and had accomplished something no one else ever had even tried to attempt!
Cheerfully, I grabbed my Maecena's right hand. "Come on, let's go!"
We both walked home laughing as if we didn't have a single care in the world. The last time I had ever felt this carefree was... I couldn't even remember!
"So, tell me about you and Holden," Kendra started, just a few turns away from her house.
I sighed, not feeling the particular desire to get into this subject. My mood instantly wavered.
"Do we have to do this now?" I sounded like a whiny child.
When our little convo-bench came into view just a few meters down the street, I decided I'd let her have the conversation she wanted. She deserved as much. Although I wasn't at all in the mood, I knew she struggled with my reluctance to share certain things.
