It was most definitely not epic. But before we reach that part, imagine this:
Some of earths most mightiest heroes, lined up one next to the other. Iron man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Bruce Banner ready to transform into the powerful hulk at any time, and two identical Captain Americas. They stood out in the field, awaiting the oncoming attack. Only the attack wasn't coming.
I stood a distance away with Howard and Peggy, staring and waiting for the fight to happen. I spoke into my suits com with my fathers, "shouldn't you guys be fighting by now?" I asked.
"Yes," came his sullen reply.
I turned to Howard and gave a shrug. What now, I was saying. "Maybe they made a gas stop?" I suggested. Howard scowled at my sarcastic question, not humouring me.
The buzzing sound of an old walkie takie came through at Agent Carters hip. She immediately brought it up to her mouth and responded, "this is Agent Carter, over."
The next few words were spoken in bits and pieces of terrifying news, "all agents.....return......city under attack.....bombs...."
The radio cut out and there was a moment of stunned silence between us. "It's a decoy," I whispered under my breath. My head whipped up to where the Avengers were standing.
"It's a decoy!!!" I yelled, running in their direction. I didn't take long to arrive, "what do you mean?" Dad asked me.
"The lab isn't under attack, it was just a decoy. The city is what's really under attack!" I spoke fast barely stumbling the words out in panic. The Avengers exchanged glances of surprise.
"We've got to head back," Tony ordered, and no further time was wasted. The team walked past me in a hurry and I trailed behind them looking at their tense backs. How could the enemy possibly know about the Avengers being here, to send us away? Most of them seemed to be thinking. And they were right to think that.
••••••••
(Back in NYC)"Listen. We've already located 14 large bombs and 23 small bombs. However we only have 12 bomb squads equipped to deactivate these types of bombs. They have all been sent out to these locations," the commanding solder pointing to dots on a map of NYC. We had flown back in a rush after learning that we had been tricked into flying out into the middle of nowhere. While we were gone there was a tip anonymously sent in with the location of 3 bombs, and informed that there were other throughout the entire city.
"How long have we got until they explode?" Questioned black widow.
"The time of explosion was also given on the tip....we've got 56 minutes until they detonate," responded the soldier. I sucked my breath in and the Avengers looked at each other in panicked glances. An hour would not be enough to deactivate each bomb and protect the people.
The soldier continued, "the time we have is not enough to get to every bomb, so a city wide evacuation has been ordered and alarms should activate in 3 minutes, notifying the citizens to leave immediately."
"No," said my father. "Cancel the evacuation. There's not enough time and it will only bring chaos making everything more difficult."
"It's not my position-"
"Now!" Yelled my father. The soldier nodded and ran off yelling into his radio.
"Why are we cancelling the evacuation Tony?!" Asked Hawkeye, "we need to think of the people."
"I am thinking of the people!" Responded Tony.
"By letting them die?!"
"Of course not!!" He roared. Hawkeye stepped back and Howard reached forward to grab his arm, which dad sharply sharply shrugged it away scowling. He quieted down, "listen quickly. We are not going to evacuate the people or deactivate the bombs-"
And uproar of arguments rose and I shrunk further away from the group of angered superheroes.
"Listen!" Yelled my father. "We are not going to do either of these, because we are going to remove the bombs from the city entirely and take them somewhere where they can't harm anyone."
There was a small surprised silence then a hush of agreement. Dad moved to the map with the locations of the located bombs. "We'll divide the areas up and collect all the bombs. Then we'll take them over here," he said while pointing to an industrial area on the outskirts of the city," where Agent Carter will have the plane ready for us to pile the bombs in and move them."
He then began assigning each other the Avengers different areas of the city. All of them had been given an area and each had ran out the door to begin their mission one after the other. Howard and Peggy had also left to move the plane to the right location. Only my dad and I were left.
"Where do I go?" I asked.
"You'll be staying here," he said briskly.
"But daaaaaddd!"
"No but dads Peter, this is war not a game you'll be staying here."
"I can help," I begged. He grabbed my arm and pulled me in, "listen Peter, this is obviously an inside job. Whoever set the distraction for us knew we were here and the only people that know we are here are the people that surround us now. Do you understand? I need you to keep an eye out for anything fishy going on here, and report back to me alright?"
I nodded as my throat was too dry to respond. I knew he was exaggerating the importance of my job, and I knew that I could a whole lot. but I also knew that he just wanted to protect me. "Okay.....fine," I finally said as his eyes bore down into my, making sure I wasn't lying. He nodded and turned sharply to leave and collect the bombs from his area. I watch him round the corner and leave.
I huffed in frustration and shoved my hands into my pockets feeling my spiderman mask. I could help them, I knew I could. There's no way I would be staying here.
