By the third morning I lose hope of Mason coming to see me, or answering my calls. Maybe he knows what I found out. Or maybe he's tired of the drama surrounding me. He probably didn't think saving me would be a constant thing and thought this would be a cleaner way to break apart from me. I finally work up the nerve to ask about him when the Detective walks in.
"Why hasn't Mason come to see me?" I ask embarrassingly blunt. Detective Sparks looks at me uncomfortably.
"I know you've become attached to him but I have some news you might not like."
"What?" I ask my mouth drying with trepidation.
"Mason was taken in for questioning before you escaped."
"Well I mean of course, right, because he was a witness but they would've been done by now right like since I'm saved?"
"I'm not finished," he huffs. "I should've been more clear though. Mason and Joseph were taken in for questioning as suspects. They were let out due to insufficient evidence but arrested right before you showed up."
"I-I don't understand... I don't believe this.. No Mason wouldn't.." I ramble, shaking my head in denial. He puts his hand on my shoulder.
"I know you don't want to believe it but apparently they found some pretty damning evidence. Since you couldn't identify your attacker they won't even require you at trial, they will most likely be sent too prison."
"No, it's not possible, and I should be allowed to tell my side right since I'm the victim." I plead.
"They'll turn it against you, call it Stockholms," he says bluntly.
"But maybe I can change their minds, when is the trial?"
"Months from now, in February."
"Oh. But that doesn't make sense... if it's so far away then why hasn't Mason come to see me?" At this he sighs.
"He was denied bail, he will remain in jail until the trial. He's considered a flight risk because of his profession and connections." My face falls.
"It's alright dear I think you should start considering the possibility that he is guilty," he says, not harshly.
"I thought it was innocent until proven guilty?"
"He pretty much already has been with whatever they're hiding away."
"Oh.. uh.. I think I would like to be alone now please.." I say looking at my hands. When he leaves I think about everything trying to make sense of it all. Logically, knowing what was in that folder, it makes sense that he's a suspect, but part of me is holding on to the hope of him being innocent. As I think about it, the hope latches on tighter. I start building a plan to prove him innocent and in turn possibly Joseph.
Later I get a call from an unknown number. I consider not answering but decide the bad guy wouldn't risk getting caught so I answer it.
"You have a collet call from-"
"Mason Daughtry-"
"Would you like to take the charges?"
"Yes." I answer immediately. I don't say anything and I hear a sigh on the other end.
"I'm sorry sweetheart, you probably don't want to talk to me.. I just.. I just wanted to hear your voice... to know you really are safe.." I contemplate this and decide to give a little.
"I'm alive. Goodnight Mason." I say softly. I hang up right after he says goodnight back. I lay back and let out a long sigh before falling into a restless sleep.
