The loud wailing of sirens awoke Kayla. Not thinking, she rushed down the stairs and flung open the door and ran outside. A police car was there and a frowning poilice woman was stood outside it. Looking up, she saw Kayla and her expression softened into a sympathetic smile. Jacob ran up beside her, his mouth hanging open. The woman walked over. "Children, I have some.... news-" Kayla butted in before she could finish the sentence. "Don't you dare sugar coat it, whatever it is!" The police woman sighed, when she looked back at the kids, her expression was grim. "Your parents were found in a car on the side of the road. The side of the car had been smashed in, the wind shield too. Your dad had glass through his chest and your mother, who was driving, got her head smashed in with pieces of glass all in her body."
Kayla and Jacob gasped. Tears threatened to fall down Kayla's face but blinking furiously, she looked the woman in the eyes. "So basically, both my parents are dead, there is nothing anyone can do about it. I get that but why are you here?" Jacob blurted out. Surprised, Kayla looked at him. Not only had he said all that, he hadn't refured to Susan and James as their parents. Glancing at the woman again, Kayla saw her face harden. "I am here, young man, to escort you and your sister to the Police Station. You will need foster parents and-" Again, Kayla decided to butt in. What she said shocked her brother more than she'd ever shocked anyone before. "Jacob is 20, legally old enough to look after me and keep this house. If my parents had a will, I'm sure they'd want the house to go to him." She took a shaky breath.
The Police Woman sighed heavily and looked at Jacob. "You ok looking after your sister?" He nods, still speechless. Sighing again, the woman writes down something on a piece of paper. "This is my phone number. Give me a call tomorrow and we can sort out all the details, yeah?" Kayla and Jacob nod in unison. The woman climbed into the car and drove off. Jacob walked inside but left Kayla outside, still shell shocked. "And after all I went through today." She muttered to herself. Suddenly, she lost it. She bit on her her hand to stop her from screaming and collasped on the floor. Kayla cried, pulled on her hair and then lay her forehead on the wet and dewy grass. She stayed there for at least an hour.
When Kayla finally got up, grass was plastered to her forehead and her face was read and blotchy from crying. Each step she took her legs felt like lead, pulling her down. She opened the door and went to the living room. Kayla fell asleep on the couch soon after and started to snore quietly. Jacob was sat in the shadows of the room, and had been unseen when Kayla walked in. True, he had no intention of talking to her ever again unless he needed something but he still felt sorry for her. Poor kid he thought to himself. Shaking his head, he got a blanket out of the airing cupboard and draped in over her body. That must have been the last kind act he had ever done for her. It was most likely the first as well.

BEEP BEEP BEEP!The obnoxious blaring of the radio could be heard from any room in the house. Rubbing her eyes, Kayla sat up grogily. She stood up ignoring the blanket that slid off her body and trudged up to her room. When she got up, she dug through the wardrobe and flung the uniform onto her bed. It consisted of a black blazer with a red collar, a white button up shirt and a pleated black and white checkerd skirt. She also had to wear a black tie. Everyone hated this uniform, even theboys hated theirs. For the girls, the shirts were see through ish and the skirts were plain ugly. For the boys, the pants they wore made them look like geeks or nerds as they had to tuck in their tops.
After doing her teeth and putting her hair into a ponytail, Kayla threw on her uniform. Remembering her dream from a few days ago, she smiled to herself.
When she got downstairs, she quickly ate an apple and grabbed her already packed bag. Wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, Kayla put the apple core in the bin. Checking the time Kayla groaned internally. It was 7:30, and school started at eight. It took her half an hour to walk to school and she was going to be late. "Better late than never I suppose." She mumbled.
When Kayla finally got to school, she noticed her gaggle of friends all chattering. She grinned. They always waited for her. "Hey guys, I'm here!" She yelled while walking over. They all turned around ans smiled. They all handed her cards and a few boxes as well. "Open them later, we're going to be late!" said a worried Shane. He might act like a cool kid but he didnt like to be in trouble with the teachers. Much to Kayla's dismay, he hung around with her brother sometimes. Chuckling the group of friends walked over to the building where they had form.
"Late, the lot of ya!" Screeched a very red looking Mrs Kimpy. Kayla loved having her as a form tutor but the rest of the class tended to disagree.
The six kids took their seats and answered their names on the register. For the rest of the fourty minutes there, the group watched Kayla open her cards and gifts. Shane, Joe and Carter had all bought the same card for her, and not delibrately either. She laughed when she saw but the boys all looked mad at each other. Carly and Macey had gotten different cards luckily.
From the five cards, Kayla managed to scrape up £100. They'd all given her a £20. In one of the two boxes she got a hunting knife, the kind Bear Grylls had and was on cloudnine. In the other, there was a laptop. It was one of Carly's old ones but it still looked new.
In the group, Carly was the rich, pretty girl that all boys wanted to date and all other girls wanted to be. Her and Kayla had been friends since year 7 of the high school. She had waist lenght brown hair and stunning blue eyes. Shane was the popular, cool kid but decided to hang with Kayla after she had helped him pass year 8. Tousled black hair and grey eyes assured him a place in most girls heart. Joe and Carter were cousins who had moved from America and had nobody to go to. Shane took a liking to their joking and friendly demeanours and introduced them to the girls. They both had light brown hair and blue eyes and were in the middle of the social ladder. Macey and Kayla went back to primary school. She had blonde hair which was so fine it was almost white. It was always worn in a long plait down her back and complimented her brown eyes well.

After a long, tedious day of double english, double photography and double drama, Kayla was finally home with her gifts. At break time the group had pigged out near the vending machines on cake brought in by Carly and then at lunch they had set up Kayla's laptop. Luckily, she hadn't gotten any homework that day and her brother was still at Volley Ball practise. Kayla hid the laptop in her room and decided to write a poem. Before she did, Kayla texted her friends a huge thank you and brushed her hair through after taking it out of a bobble. She hadn't told her friends about last night though, Kayla was planning on telling them tomorrow.
When the wind blows down my castle of sand
On a good day turned bad
I know you would take my hand
And tell me not to be sad
But now I'm left alone
Because you are no more
This empty house no longer feels like home
Acting normal feels like a big chore
Hearing a door being slammed loudly downstairs, Kayla quickly folded up her poem and put it in her school bag. "Get your lazy ass down here right now!" Screamed Jacob in anger. Startled, Kayla lept up and rushed down. Only when she reached the kitchen, found her brother grinning evily at her.
