I usually came to class early, but this time, I made it through the doors of the biology lab at the last second, just before the clock ticked over the hour. Ms. Levenson looked at me, surprised at my almost-tardiness, but didn't say anything as I looked at the room, Nico not there. Sitting at an my usual seat at the front, Ms. Levenson cleared her throat as she walked over to the whiteboard, pen squeaking.
"Today we'll be learning about plant reproduction," Ms. Levenson said, rolling her eyes as there were a few snickers from the back of the classroom. "Yes, yes, reproduction. Get all of your immature laughter out now." Ms. Levenson sighed as giggles ensued. Then, the classroom door opened with a loud bang as the hinges swung wildly, everyone going quiet. I didn't have to look up to see who was standing there, my body tensing immediately.
"Late again, Mr. Beckett," Ms. Levenson said coldly.
Shit.
I didn't look up from my books as I heard Nico's shoes slap against the ground, cursing silently as the chair beside me screeched. The empty space next to me was soon filled with Nico's long body, the smell of cigarette smoke and his aftershave assaulting me. I felt Nico look down at me, eyes trailing a blaze down my face to my arm and to my hand. Nico let out a curt noise when he saw my bruised knuckles, and I immediately shoved my hand under the table and out of sight.
I could barely pay attention to the lesson, Ms. Levenson's voice drifting in and out as I tried not to think about Nico's body next to me, though the more I tried not to think about it the more it invaded my mind.
"Now, go to chapter 14 and answer the sample questions there. We'll go through the answers at the end of class, and I'll be picking random people to answer them so you all better work." A chorus of groans erupted and Ms. Levenson smiled with satisfaction, walking back to her desk after pushing up her glasses. I didn't notice the wary glance the teacher gave Nico as she walked past, cracking open my textbook to the right page.
"I don't have a textbook," I heard Nico say next to me, his body moving a little closer to mine, making me flinch.
"So?" I replied, forcing my voice to stay steady, though it only came out sounding strained. I felt Nico sigh next to me, his hand reaching out to pull my textbook closer towards him as he shuffled his chair closer, his hip brushing against mine. "What are you doing?" I hissed at him under my breath, glancing around the room as Nico just smirked. As I thought, people were watching us with beady eyes. A few people had the decency to pretend they weren't looking, peering occasionally from behind their books. Others were just blatantly staring, textbooks not even open as they found us far more interesting than plant reproduction. I felt Alyssa's cool gaze on my back, her mouth set into a deep scowl as she chewed loudly on her gum.
"You can at least share your book with me after you punched me in the face," Nico said, and I yelped, giving him a fearful look. Nico just looked at me, a small smile on his face as he pointed to the richly-coloured bruise on his face. "It really hurts, you know. Had to ice it for the rest of the weekend. You also cut my lip, it was bleeding for-fucking-ever. I think you may have knocked a tooth loose as well... where is it... oh yeah, there it is. I think it's about to come out..."
"Please stop," I pleaded, Nico chuckling as I lowered my head, biting my lip nervously. Covering my eyes with my hands, pressing on them until I saw red spots, Nico spoke beside me again, voice a little softer.
"No one's ever punched me after sleeping with me," Nico whispered softly enough so only I could hear, and I let out a choked noise, turning to him. "Slapped, maybe, but never punched. It was kind of exciting."
"That's so fucking gross," I said, face twisting in disgust as Nico laughed, louder this time. Ms. Levenson looked up from her desk, eyes angry until she saw me paling, choosing to look down at her papers instead. Other students turned towards the noise, eyes wide with shock as they saw Nico smiling down at me, amusement glimmering in his blue eyes.
