"Do you have to walk next to me?" I whispered under my breath, side-stepping to put some space between Nico and I as we walked across the carpark towards the school buildings. My back continued to fold over as the whispers of students around us grew. Nico just scoffed, stepping towards me again. Standing close enough for our shoulders to bump occasionally, people couldn't mistake the fact that we were walking to school together, and it was that fact that made everyone nudge their friends and cover their mouths with cupped hands as they passed gossip back and forth.
"Hm? Did you say something, Wes?" Nico snickered, leaning in a little to whisper quietly to me.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?" I grumbled, stepping away from him again, only for Nico to match my movements, as he had been doing this whole walk towards the doors.
"Thoroughly," Nico grinned, winking. Rolling my eyes, I gave up trying to disengage myself from him, and instead focused on drowning out the whispers of the students that were getting louder and less discreet.
"I can't believe you're not bothered by all of this," I said, wincing as I saw a group of students point at us shamelessly. One of the people in the group slapped the wayward finger, saying that we'll realise that they're talking about us. Too late, though.
"You get used to the attention," Nico said casually, shrugging. I just scoffed.
"Riiiight, Mr. Popular," I said, making a gagging noise as Nico just laughed. Stepping through the front doors, the staring and whispering only got worse; people were loitering around at their lockers, and as we walked past, their books and bags were forgotten as their eyes widened to saucers, trailing behind us as if they were mopping the ground we walked on with their gazes.
"What the fuck?!" a shrill, ear-grating voice shrieked from across the hall. Nico's face immediately became a little annoyed at the sharp noise, and I immediately knew why. Alyssa. Her and her posse were standing slack-jawed by her locker, her skirt still impossibly short and her cleavage as robust as ever. Her eyes were darting between the two of us enough to make her cross-eyed, and her lacquered finger was shaking in the air as she pointed towards us. Turning towards her as Nico and I walked past, eyes locking, I couldn't help but smirk as she glared. I felt a sudden surge of satisfaction flare within me as Alyssa's mouth bobbed up and down, Nico not even sparing her a glance as he looked at me when we reached my locker. Leaning against the wall beside me as I rummaged through my locker, passing Nico some of my books to hold as I made sure to grab everything, Alyssa's heated gaze at my back was palpable, but not uncomfortable. In fact...
It felt good.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?" Nico said, mimicking the words I had spoken to him moments before, making me bat my lashes sweetly at him, feigning innocence.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I said, Nico just shaking his head with a smile on his face.
"Heeeey, Wes-oo-lee, long time no- ohmyfuckinggod."
"Hey, morning Benny," I said, recognising his voice beside me. I didn't turn to him as I closed my locker, taking my books from Nico's waiting hands. "Thanks, Nico."
"Sure," Nico said, glancing towards Benny. Nodding his head, Nico greeted him briefly. "Hey."
"H-Hey," Benny squeaked, and I heard Nico snort at Benny's reaction to him. I gave Nico a harsh look, kicking his shin lightly. Before I could chastise Nico, the bell rang, and Nico took that as his cue to leave.
"I'll see you in bio," Nico said, plunging his hand in his pocket to pull out a cigarette.
"You're not going to class?" I asked, already knowing his answer. Nico shook his head as he placed the smoke between his lips, ruffling my hair briefly. I slapped his hand away, Nico's laugh disappearing along with him as he left the school building. When the doors behind him closed, it was as if the whole hallway suddenly began moving, everyone finally taking their eyes away from the two of us, though people still gave me wary, confused or shocked glances as they stumbled past.
