NINETEEN

Sofia had texted me early in the morning, though I slept through the notification after a long night with Nico. Not that we did anything; after having lunch and lazing around in the sun on the rooftop, enjoying the gentle breeze and the view, Nico had driven me home a few hours after and headed off. It wasn't until the early hours of the morning that Nico had woken me with a call, and it wasn't until an hour later that we stopped talking and I was allowed to drift of into sleep.

Now well into the afternoon on a Sunday, I was groggily lying in bed flicking through my phone, dread seeping through the safety of my blanket as I looked at Sofia's message.

Sofia - 9:14am
Hey Wes!
Do u wanna come over to my place later?
I'm home all day

There was a lull in the messages until 10am, where she again asked me if I wanted to come over. I gulped, scrolling down the line of messages she had sent me, the last one with a note of concern that I hadn't replied to any of her messages. I rubbed my eyes with my phone held close to my nose, the lettering blurry without my glasses. My fingers tapped on my glass screen, the words coming easier through my fingers than my mouth.

Wes - 3:30pm
Yeah sounds good
Sorry I was asleep
Late night

I rolled over in my bed as I saw three dots at the bottom of the chat and a green circle around Sofia's picture. As I looked at the miniature overtly candid shot of her, her dark hair loose around her face and her eyes closed so her long lashes left a shadow on the smooth skin there, I could picture the way those features would fall if she knew that I didn't see her in that way.

The way she clearly saw me.

My phone vibrated in my hand as she replied with speed that put every millennial to shame.

Sofia - 3:30pm
Studying all night?
I have coffee and food :)

I managed a little smile at her words, the imagined visage of Sofia waiting for me at her house with a steaming mug of instant coffee in her slender hands not an unwelcome one, though not the one I found myself imagining at all unsavoury times of the day.

Sofia - 3:31pm
Do u wanna come over now?

No.

Wes - 3:32pm
Sure
See u in a few

Turning my phone off, I rolled onto my stomach and buried my head into my pillow, groaning.

"You need to stop this, Wesley," I scolded myself, words muffled by the fabric and feathers. Laying limply in my bed for a few minutes longer, I finally gathered what little courage I had left and managed to roll myself out of my blankets and sheets. I got changed quickly, grabbing the outfit I wore the day before from the back of a chair without a second thought. It didn't take me too long to stick my contacts onto my eyeballs and muss my hair, which was in mild disarray atop my head. I picked at the ends of a few clumped locks of hair, grimacing as I noticed how much my natural roots had grown out. What had once been a professionally styled warm blonde had turned almost brassy, and my dark brown roots were stark against the brightness.

I really had to get my hair done again.

As I leaned into the mirror to get a closer look at my root situation, the door to the shared bathroom was flung open, Jamie barging in.

"Gotta pee," Jamie announced, stepping through the inner door that hid the toilet, closing it behind her. I sighed as I heard Jamie curse, the toilet seat apparently still being up and almost swallowing her ass whole.

"You're the only guy in this household, Wes. Can you put the damn seat down when you've finished pissing? Jesus," Jamie whined, her voice not able to be dulled by the thick door.
