"Kai! Run!"
A middle aged woman yelled as she ran past the dark brown haired girl. She was clutching her own child to her chest as she ran past. The child's name is Haru and he would play with Kai in the forest surrounding the small Earth Kingdom village called Ko with other children.
Kai stared after the woman with puzzled grey colored eyes. She didn't know what was going on but it had to be bad. The wind blew around Kai as she picked up her walk to a run. Even though she would be really tired by the time she got home from all the running; she didn't care. Simply because she had that same feeling from a year ago. When a bad storm came in from the ocean on her birthday. It rained so much and so hard that all the crops were ruined that harvest.
Kailani (most commonly known as Kai by the village) made it home in time to watch as huge boulders smashed into her home. Eyes widening in horror, she watched as the wood give and splinter off. It became simple kindling that one would use in a fire. Like the type her Papa would make when they camped out in the woods.
Arms wrapped around Kai, lifting her up, and securing her to the side of someone that continued to run in the direction of shelter. The person turned sharply into a alleyway between a bakery and the house that Haru lived in with his mother. "Lani, are you okay sweetie?" a sweet, melodic voice asked.
"What's going on Mama? Who's doing this?" Kai asked clutching her Mama's robes in a death grip.
"Listen, my little storm," the women said gazing down at her daughter with soft amber colored eyes filled with love and concern. "I need you to brave Lani and make me a promise. You need to run. Run and never come back here. In the woods where you and your Papa camp is an Ostrich-horse with some supplies. Take her and go."
"But what about you Mama?"
A loud crash sounded from outside the alley and the mother looked up sharply and gritted her teeth together. Amber eyes lite up with a fierce fire. Looking back at her daughter she knew what she had to do. Holding her daughters shoulders, she pushed her away harshly and said, "I'll be fine. Now go Kailani."
The harshness in her voice made Kai take a step back. Which gave the mother plenty of room to step into a bending stance that her daughter had never seen her Mama make. The only person who made that stance was her Papa and he was soldier. A man appeared at the mouth of the alley with swords in hands that had spikes on the blade.
Thrusting her left hand forward, a gush of fire left the mother's hand. It propelled itself to the man with tremendous speed. Kai spun on her heel and ran in the direction of the woods as fast as she could go, but a scream piercing the air caused her to quickly stop and turn around. The sight that greeted her would haunt her dreams for the rest of her live.
Her mother had a sword going through her stomach. To scared to even continue running, Kai just stood there.
"Go Kailani!" the yell that left her mother's mouth spurred her into running again. And run she did. It was the first time she had ever bended in her life and she wasn't sure that she wanted to do it ever again.
I awoke with my mouth parted in a silent scream. Sweat covered my entire body from head to toe. I turned to my window and could barely see the sun peeking of the tops of the trees. I sigh.
'It's been five years since.......'
Shaking my head to dislodge that thought. I get out of bed and go to the bathroom to bath and change my clothes. After I go through my morning routine I start meditating. Grandma Kimi won't be up for another hour or so.
Three years ago, I came to Kyoshi Island by mistake and had been found by a girl four years older than myself named Suki. I was sick and malnourished. Suki and her family had volunteered to take me in but Grandma Kimi knew how to take care of me and was the only one who had the time to take of me. So I've been staying with her since.
"Are you going to come and eat child?" an elderly voice spoke from the doorway of my bedroom. It jerked me out of my trance and I could tell from the amused look on Grandma Kimi's face that I must have had a stupid look on my face again.
"I'm sorry could you repeat what you said Grandma Kimi?"
"I said are you going to come and eat breakfast child?' her voice was a used to but I didn't care about that. Because food! I was out of my room and at the table and already halfway done with my food before the loud bang of the front door opening disturbed the peace.
Suki comes marking in and yells, "Kai!"
She stormed in already dressed in her Kyoshi Warrior uniform. Suki then snagged me by the collar of my shirt and dragged me outside against my will. She was nagging the whole way about how I had missed a couple days of training and all I could was gaze longing back at the house because struggling was getting me nowhere.
"My food......."
