I was watching Ruby stare at Gilbert as he slowly turned the pages on his book, looking slightly lost in his world, yet very focused on what he was reading.

I tried not to notice the little things he was doing. Like the way he was gripping the sheets as if they'd fall if he held them any lighter. Or the way he bit his lips ever so often when he was concentrating. But I couldn't, and wouldn't, notice that.

Ruby, on the other hand, couldn't notice him more if she tried. Her big blue eyes sparkled with admiration, her soft pink lips were open while she studied his face. I could see the love radiating from her. Literally. I was just waiting for the pink hearts to jump out of her eyes. There wasn't a doubt about her love for him. Not the slightest.

I closed my eyes and turned the other way, to the front of the classroom. Miss Stacy was studying the same book she has assigned us to read individually, which I realized I wasn't doing right now.

I often got lost in my thoughts. And as much as I liked that most of the time, it wasn't really helpful at school.

I turned my eyes back to the book, putting my hand on the desk. That didn't turn out to be a good move, because it resulted in me pushing the pens I had down onto the floor.

Miss Stacy shot her head up, her eyes unusually strict and uncompromising, as if I had disturbed her from some sweet, secret thoughts. I looked at her apologetically, so she smiled back quickly before she turned back to her book.

I stood up to collect the pens, just as Gilbert stood up to help me, of course, and our eyes met before we kneeled down to find all of them.

"I can do it alone, thank you!" I said silently, but with my usual amount of vigorousness.

"Yes, I'm sure you can. Or I can help you."

He chuckled and looked at me amused and maybe a little surprised, yet again, by my dismissal of him whenever he tried to talk to me. He should be used to it by now, though.

Our hands touched gently as we both reached for the last pen, but I pulled away quickly and looked to the ground. He's not going to get me to look at him. Not this time.

"Thanks for the help," I said softly and held my breath. We stood a bit too close for my liking.

"Always a pleasure," he smiled charmingly and winked at me boyishly, brushing his hand over my arm one last time.

I caught Ruby's face as I took the few steps which were necessary to reach my seat. I felt uneasy and it must've been obvious by the way that I walked. Ruby was looking back at me sadly, maybe even some anger could be seen in her expression, which wasn't very usual for her. Her cheeks were flushed and her lips were put into a straight line.

No. Not again. I wasn't doing this to her. Why do I have to be so clumsy?!

But more importantly, why does Gilbert Blythe always have to ruin my life? Always.
